  • neck/shoulder pain- what is it?

I've had this since yesterday. I woke up and my neck and shoulder on the right side hurt. Definitely from sleeping, I must have either slept in a weird posture or moved suddenly.

My question is...when that happens, is that a muscle spasm?

Still hurts today, but getting better...just stinks because it's on my right side and I'm right-handed. Turning my head isn't fun either.

Yeah a muscle spasm or a knot. If you can get your husband to find the knot, it'll most likely be in that muscle that goes across the top/back of your shoulder up to your neck. Find the knot and then press his thumb in it and hold it for like 20 seconds at a time. On a scale of 1-10 you want the pain to be about a 7...If you just hold steady pressure on the knot, it will release.

Or, go find a masseuse that does the chair massage....around here it's like $1 per minute...15 minutes focused on your kneck and shoulders should be plenty.

Thanks Joy. I did have hubby massage it, but I think he may not have found the knot yet. I was sitting up though...might be better to lay on my belly. Going to ask him again when I get home!!

I tried the heating pad too, all it did was make my shoulder warm.

it might also be you over stretched your joint sleeping on it. gentle stretching will help with that issue. if you can use your other arm to find the location and some times the location isn't were you thnk it is cause mucles will tense up to guard an injured area which in turn makes it worse cause then they injure themselves.

if it is a knot finding it and deep massaging it will get rid of it heat helps so warm it up before he works it

Thanks 2big...I never thought of using the heating pad before DH massages my shoulder...that's a good idea!

I remember waking up in the middle of the night Saturday night/Sunday morning. My shoulder felt very uncomfortable and my arm was "asleep," (I was sleeping on my arm) so I think that was the culprit.

asleep is when you compressed a nerve somewhere ouch. stretching and massaging the trigger points ( that is the fancy term now for the knots) should help you a lot.

Re: neck/shoulder pain- what is it?

I woke with a similar pain last year, I'd had it on and off for a couple of months, but this one morning it really hurt - so I went to see an osteopath, he sorted it out over a couple of sessions. He said you're best to get it sorted out by a professional at the beginning, or it will keep coming back again and again!! Since my treatment, I haven't had a twitch (touch wood!!)

I hope its feeling better this morning!!

                Thanks Jane,

Yikes...I should consider that. I get enough muscle spasms in my back that's for sure!

I took 2 OTC naxproxen (naprosyn?) tablets last night. It relieved some of the pain within a few hours, which was good. It's still here today but better. Thank goodness for anti-inflammatory medicine.

don't forget you have lost over 20 pounds of fat padding so you might need a new pillow to support your neck and head when you sleep.
