        Re: ? Migraines ?

I do. Get migraines. I've had maybe 2 ever. But they were pretty close together. My doctor had a CT scan done. She put me on Propranolol. I haven't had one since, though I've only been on it for about a month.

My doctor called them Cluster headaches. She said it's a type of migraine, more common in men, which fits all the symptoms I described. After my first migraine, I had a bad headache every day until she prescribed the beta-blocker. Now, I'm fine. I have to take it every night before bed, but that's not so annoying.

Congrats on the six pounds! That's awesome.

          Re: ? Migraines ?

I used to get migraines--in fact I've been getting them since I was 8 years old, and quite regularly, about once a week. I suffered through them for about 5 years until I told my doctor--it was around the time I was diagnosed with Graves Disease, and the migraines were thought to be related to that. I was put on Inderal, twice a day--my migraines disapppeared. After my Graves Disease was "cured," I didn't have migraines for quite some time. Then I began to get them a couple years after that, but not quite as often as before. What I began to notice recently is that they were often related to what I would eat. When I did Atkins before, I DID NOT HAVE A MIGRAINE for the entire year I was on it! I have restarted Atkins this August, and I HAVE NOT had a migraine since!

Migraines can be caused by a lot of things--some are reactions to food, some are the body's way of coping if you're going "too fast," some are reactions to stress, and some are reactions to sensory overload, such as a smell or visual cue.

If you want some REALLY fascinating reading, check out Migraine, by Oliver Sacks. I learned SOOOOOOOOOOO much about my body and my migraine from that book!

I feel for all you migraine sufferers. Thankfully I only get them verrrrry occasionally, but they certainly are not fun! I do get headaches quite a bit...though not nearly as many since Atkins. Can usually manage those just by taking aspirin. Guess am lucky, but am interested in what you all have to say, for those rare occasions when I too get laid low.

Well, if you aren't on a perscription preventative drug, (which I actually feel I don't need but hey, if my doctor says so ::shrug: then I think the best you can do once you get one is go into a dark, quiet room. Take up to 800mg of Advil or some other type of ibuprofen, and try your best to sleep.

My doctor actually perscribed me 800mg tablets of ibuprofen, "just in case" I get a migraine despite the medication. I haven't had to use any yet, thank goodness.

                Re: ? Migraines ?

i used to get them pretty bad when i weighed 168 pounds. i worried whether to take something or not and decided early on, that good or bad, i had to take something so my pain remedy was exedrin pm. it is the only thing i found to provide relief as an otc med.

since losing the weight i rarely get them. i do get headaches from time to time now but know my body well enough to know what the cause is.

                  Re: ? Migraines ?

I go to a massage therapist monthly and she told me that massage therapy on specific neck muscles can work wonders with migraines. I personally don't suffer from them, but we were talking about the benefits of massage. My son was getting very intense headaches and he took the massage route, and guess what? After a few sessions the headaches are history. It's a much nicer solution than drugs....give it a try, it may just work for you.
