  • What To Eat When Sick

I wanted to start Atkins (Actually South Beach) in Feb, but I got sick. Sinus infection, chest cold, etc.. etc.. I was put on a course of anti-biotics.

I could barely look at anything rich and creamy like scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, etc.. etc.. much less eat them. And the anti-biotics were wreaking havoc in my stomach.

I followed a BRAT diet. Banannas, Rice, Applesauce, Tea, and mached potatoes for several weeks.

What do you eat when sick ?

Ditto. LOTS and LOTS of liquids!

But honestly, I haven't gotten sick since I've been on Atkins. Funny how that works, huh?

Here's a thread in the Low Carb Menu forum that addresses this:

        http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=22623

About the BRAT diet....traditionally it was devised to combat diarrheal infections because each food (bananas, rice, apples/applesauce, tea/toast) has a component/quality which aids in constipation.

But for some reason, mothers adopted the BRAT diet for every ailment under the sun no matter how inappropriate the BRAT diet would be: runny nose--BRAT diet, pneumonia--BRAT diet, broken arm--BRAT diet, etc.

I'd go the "soup" route too, if I got sick...which so far (thank heavens) I haven't since doing Atkins... and it's been two years now.

              not2late,

I tried as best I could to avoid saying it but when I referred to the "anti-biotics wreaking havoc in my stomach" the implication was diarhea was bringing me down.

Thanks for the info though. I'm assuming the chicken soup is chicken meat, veggies and broth. No whole grain rice ?

              Thanks for the input guys.

P.S. Thanks for the link not2late. December 2005 ? Wow, if it isn't a sticky maybe it can be if it's the only thread addressing that topic. Good stuff.

                nope, no rice

i've just boiled up chicken and drained the fat and sipped it through a straw. veggies would depend on the rung you (or anyother member) was on, but quite frankly, eating the veggies would not be what i would want to do when feeling ill. that would be up to you, but again, keeping the veggies in mind that you are allowed, according to your rung.

WarOnTypeII, just out of curiosity, before I answer, please tell me , are you asking for future reference, or because you are still sick, either with the sinus/head mess or the messed up innards?

Antibiotics typically have the ability to mess with you by killing off all the normal good fauna in your system, while killing bad bacteria, but this leaves your digestive tract vulnerable until you replace the good. Probiotics found in yogurt (not allowed on induction) can be bought as a tablet, and will quickly restore the missing good guys.

A good remedy for the sinus/head mess is prevention, obviosly. Make sure you are getting an adequate supply of nutrients for your lifestyle, preferably from food choices, but for some nutrients, a supplement is recommended by Dr. Atkins while on his diet, especially during induction.

When I am just beginning to suspect the onset of a cold/flu/infection, I grab for the antioxidants. I've found Ca/Mg/K ascorbate to be most effective for rapid results, if taken soon enough. The pure powder is hard to find, though, without ascorbic acid diluting it. 1 tsp = 1000-2000 mg vit. C

If it's too late for that, ditto what the others said, plus get your rest & supplements in.

Re: What To Eat When Sick

                    All of the above boonie.

I'm due for another sinus infection before the summer kicks in. I've developed allergies over the past few years and it seems every year I'll wake up with a sinus infection that last about a week. Been dealing with ear infections all my life and I guess it's now always going into my sinus.

My innards right now are .... I don't know how to explain them. Bloated feeling and people have commented on my stomach of late. I chalked that up to the gain in weight PLUS the antibiotics and general illness. I've only been off anti-biotics a week and a half. Last week was my last week of BRAT and stuff like Dannon Activia Yogurt and stuff.

While I still feel somewhat bloated now, it's not as bad, I attribute it to my dietary changes AND some remnants of being sick.

I've alway been a multi-vitamin taker and an anit-oxidant taker, etc.. etc..

Does that address your questions adequately ?

Aye, captain. Bummer, allergies. Can't help you with that, beyond telling you some folk remedies passed down for hay fever by Grandma involving local honey. Sorry - my Brother's wife and son have awful allergies, kept under control by Dr's Rx.

Atkins has natural a diuretic (spell check) So if you are drinking plenty of water, hopefully the bloating will go down. I noticed since I have been drinking 100.4 ozs of water a day my feet and hands dont swell anymore.
