  • Anyone out there with arthritis??

Ive suffered for many years from this condition. I have my good days where noone would ever believe theres anything wrong with me, but then i have my bad days - like today...

Im *trying* to believe its just a bad day, but in honesty, since i started back on induction its been a lot worse and i dont remember this from last time so i'm guessing thats a good thing but as it stands right now i cant help but relate the 2...

Let me explain some... I was 47 minutes late for work today, i couldnt get out of bed, physically could not move and was crying in pain. I had to get one of the guys from work come get me and take me there because i could not walk at all.

i got back home from work and sat in the chair, and lo and behold, i'm stuck! it just took me nearly a half hour to get upstairs to the toilet, doing it on my butt... its a good job i wasnt *that* desperate to go or ida peed myself.

So anyway, my point behind this post was, does anyone else suffer with this condition? has atkins affected you the way it has me here? or is this just another bad day?

Sorry to go on, but ive got nothing else to do considering i cant move outta this chair lol.

Yep, sure do. A friend clued me in and the dietician backed it up today.

It may have to do with saturated fat in the diet. It's the omega sixes that cause inflamation and pain in arthritic joints. So when you eat things like fatty hamburgers and chicken skins that Atkins allows, it may be aggravating your arthritis.

In fact, I'm dealing with possibly the same right now with my more arthritic joints due to eating a lot of the Hamburger Pie. Also, if I take in too much full cream, it seems to flair up also.

The dietician said strive for more omega three's found in fish like salmon and different oils (olive and canoloa) and keep the saturated fats down a bit. I have a list, got to dig it out of the car, if you're interested.

Praying the pain eases up soon, because it's miserable...

            Emma,

I'm sorry to hear you are in so much pain. Is there anything your doc can do to help? I wish I knew more about arthritis so I could offer some help. But I can see there are some here who have given some very good advice!

            Hope you feel better soon.

I saw "olive and canola" as other sources besides fish. Besides that, you could also try supplements. The fish oil, and glucosamine both I've taken recently for some arthritis in my neck.

This booklet the dietician gave me is really geared towards the low-fat diet. Needless to say, I'm ignoring most of it.

The foods with Omega 3 fatty acids are: salmon, mackerel, albacore tuna (not regular tuna), herring, trout, sardines, walnuts canola oil, flaxseed, tofu (blah!), and soybeans.

However, some of my research says we need omega sixes also. So what I would do is just cut down on stuff like chicken skin and ease up on high saturated fats like in hamburger. No reason you can't do more fowl and other meats and add more fat like olive oil (which is really beneficial for us) to add fat to our diet. I still eat saturated fat in many forms but try to get more monosaturated fats (olive oil!) in my meals over the day.

That's a darn long wait for those shots!! Why didn't they do one right away?? If you haven't already, get glucosamine supplements and make sure you're getting your calcium, magnesium, and vit. D. Take those at night before bed. And don't skip on the water! I had shots in my knee also. It was Supartz which increases the synovial fluid in the knee. I was told to keep my workout activity light for about six to eight weeks after the last shot so the fluid could do its thing. No problem with that, atrophied muscles aren't allowing me to do much. I'm desperate to lose a lot of weight so my knees get a break here.

Here's the list of foods with saturated fats: Bacon and bacon grease, butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil (uh-oh!), lard (ya think?!), meat fat, sausage, hot dogs, bratwurst (yes, many of these are no-brainers), prime rib, palm oil, solid shortening (poison!), sour cream, cream cheese (too bad, I'm eating it...), cheese, ice cream, egg yolks (yeah, like I'm giving those up - NOT!), whole milk, 2% milk, poultry with skin.

Here's a funny. She's trying to convince me to eat no more than 3 or 4 egg yolks a week to keep my cholesterol down. My HDL and LDL were tested recently and fine. The punchline to all this is I've been eating 3 or 4 whole eggs a DAY every day for I don't know HOW long!! I LIVED on eggs before I knuckled down here in the past couple weeks! LOL!! (They may have been a factor with my knee problems but certainly not my cholesterol!)

Re: Anyone out there with arthritis??

                        Hi Emma

I have absolutely no idea what effect the Atkins way would have on you, I do know that things like Glucosamine take years to have any effect.

A friend of mine used this product and is positive that it has changed his life!
http://www.nutritioncentre.co.uk/doc...product_id=683 it is the same stuff that they use for horses that have arthritis - so you would think you could get it prescribed - maybe you can where you live.

I have TOATAL sympathy with you as I was in this state 9 Months ago. I was Lucky as in the UK with the NHS getting the sort of treatment I had is very difficult, and I had to see 3 different consultants - who luckily all came to the same conclusion - TKR

.............so this evening my husband and I went for a mile and a half walk!!
This has not been possible for years!

anyhow as I started to say - I know EXACTLY how you are feeling and the pain you are in, and yes it is quite normal to have good days - where you wouldn't know there was a problem and other days like you describle - presumably you are seeing an OS ? what does he/she say about the condition of your joints?

keep your chin up - there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

The best thing is that by losing weight you are actually putting less of a strain on your joints - which can only be good!

                        big hugs

Where is your arthritis that's so painful at?? I don't know what your fitness is like or if you've been seditary like me, but I'm wondering if your problems are similar to mine. Turning out that my muscles are so weak, tight and all that they're the major issues right now. I managed to get some relief from the muscles and the knee felt really good. Much better than I was expecting.

Maybe you've been doing the same as me, babying the arthritis and allowing the muscles to go in the toilet.

its in my knees and hips - i hope ive not been babying it, i swim as much as i can as its such low impact i find it can help me, im even gonna give the aquaaerobics a shot this week in the hopes that the water will support that too, the only thing that will stop me is if its a bad day and well... i wont be able to get down the steps into the pool.

My specialist is giving me 3 weeks of shots in my knees startin from the 16th, after 6 weeks if theres been no change he'll go in and give me some cartlidge ( replica of?), apparently theres nothing there at all now...

TKR is something that i really dont want to have to go thru... i believe they have to be replaced every 10 years?? thats a lot more surgery in my life!!

Luckily these days a TKR will last a lot longer than 10 yrs, you are obviously not bad enough that you need it either or you would be begging to have it done. Keep up with the pool exercises - very good for your joints. If you have no cartalidge there now (was it removed?) then they wont be able to put one back there.
