  • do any of you suffer from anxiety disorder?

i have it bad... and if you have it, you know that fear of death and associated thoughts happen all the time. anyway, my current diet (i'm starting induction again tomorrow) is bad news. the wife and i eat fast food alot and eat snack foods and hamburger helper, etc... i really feel my health is in serious bad shape... my diet doesnt help my anxiety disorder at all... if i was eating better, exercising more and weighing less, i feel like the fearful thoughts wouldn't mean so much to me, because i would know i was in better health.

    can anyone relate?

Hi! I also suffer from an anxiety disorder and I know for me, that this WOE has helped me TREMENDOUSLY. The healthier I become physically definitely effects my mental health as well. I don't obsess about my health or dying from being overweight, having a heart attack, becoming diabetic, having a stroke from High Cholesterol; you name it, ive thought about it. I can only speak for myself though! I also take medication and am determined to be off of it someday. I firmly believe that your mental, spiritual and physical health are all intertwined and with one comes the other.

        Good luck on Induction!!

Re: do any of you suffer from anxiety disorder?

I've been dealing with incredibly severe Social Anxiety for years and years now. Counseling was required just so I'd step outside. I wasn't massively overweight, but I needed to lose 50 pounds.

I started atkins half a year before my wedding and ended up losing the 50 pounds. Not only did I feel better about myself, I found that WHAT I ate DRASTICALLY changed my mood and feelings of anxiety!!!

Completely cutting out sugar and sugary items resulted in a VERY stable mood throughout the day. Combined with a better internal body image, I've found myself actually brimming with confidence most days. I restarted Atkins after gaining a slight bit of weight (not wanting to feel miserable again), and my anxiety has dropped even more!

I hope others have had similar results!

            Hi Dan!
I Also Suffer from Anxiety, and I agree that this WOE and Exercise is critical to helping with it, because not only do eating this way and getting exercise boost your confidence and help you feel good physically, it helps you lose weight, and all of these things create a more calm sense of self.
I wish you much luck! I am restarting Induction tomorrow, and can't wait!

Anxiety / panic disorder here too. I honestly can't say if my diet has anything to do with it or not since it's been under control fairly well for a while now. But I'm thinking if Atkins does help, that's just another very good reason to stick with it.

Re: do any of you suffer from anxiety disorder?

I don't think it is Atkins Specifically, I think its taking control back, by eating good, exercising and losing weight. I think poor eating habbits and all that make you feel out of control and helpless, which contributes to depression and anxiety. Winning this battle, be it by Atkins or some other program, boosts your self esteem and leads to a healthier body and mind, and calmer mind.

I too suffer from anxiety, and this woe helps me out tremendously, I have that fear of death, and when im on plan and excercising, i hardly think about it, so i have to say atkins is the reason.

Lisa I have the same issue, I have the fear of death, and if I am exercising and taking care of myself it subsides.

I also suffer from an anxiety disorder.I have attacks all the time.My doctor recently put me on xanax. It really helps.Just dont abuse it.Hopefully losing weight will help my self image and make the attacks subside.I also have social anxiety.Dont know if that is from being overweight or not.

Sorry woady those attacks are brutal sometimes!
I think social anxiety is about self esteem. I know I don't go out much anymore and Its because I will feel fat around my thin friends, etc.
I know once I lose this weight that will go away because I will feel better about myself.
That much more of a reason to stick with it!

Re: do any of you suffer from anxiety disorder?

Hi Cobra: I have slight OCD (which I think is more helpful than hindering in my situation), which is an anxiety phenomenon. I have this question for you: have you done any research (on the internet for example) on what happens to the brain while it is in ketosis? I found some very interesting studies regarding seizure-prone children who were put on very high fat, very low carb diets to control their seizures when medication failed to work. In at least 25% of cases (in most studies) the seizures subsided.

So what does this have to do with anxiety? The scientists who performed the studies postulated that the brain produces more GABA when it is using ketones for fuel as opposed to glucose. GABA, somewhat like valium and xanax, has a calming effect, and this is the relevance I find to anxiety disorders as well. Personally, I have found that I feel very calm--almost sedate at times--when my body and brain are using ketones for fuel. So maybe the Atkins WOE will help you feel better.

I would encourage you to do your own research to verify the things I have discussed above. I could be wrong on the percentages.

                              Good luck to you!
