Okay results are in! Blood test taken at 3 weeks into atkins.

    Serum Cholesterol HI 8.1 mmol/L (<5.0 U)

    Serum Triglycerides 1.5 mmol/L (<1.6 U)

    Serum HDL Cholesterol 1.7 mmol/L (>1.1 U)
    level

    Calculated LDL HI 5.7 mmol/L (<3.0 U)
    cholesterol level

    Total Cholesterol:HDL HI 4.8 (<3.5 U)

So, the GP wants to see me to discuss a LOW FAT DIET

WHAT NOW? Shall I beg to get retested in 8 weeks and give him my Atkins book to read?

my guess, your doc knows all about Atkins, or thinks he knows all about Atkins.
he's the doc, you're the patient. if your confirmed with this woe, just tell him you are giving this woe more time.

        Re: cholesterol results

Some people have high total cholesterol on Atkins (like me)... but with most of these people the HDL goes up alot (you need to wait at least six weeks before testing) so that the risk ratio comes down. Mine (risk ratio) is off the charts in a positive sense and I got my doctors full approval. Total cholesterol means nothing.

I'm not familiar with the figures you posted as they use a different guage here over here, but if the figure in brackets is the normal value, then I'd wait to see if your HDL goes up in time. Correct me if I'm wrong someone, but it really only seems like your LDL is a bit up... if your HDL rises, that'll take care of that risk-wise. Hope I haven't talked rubbish!

uk girl, i posted a thread in this forum just a couple of days ago on cholesterol. there are some links included that might help you sort out the numbers. the thread should be right close to the top since this forum is not as active as others.

              Re: cholesterol results

Well I got a letter from my GP today which says that my cholesterol is higher than recommended, but that they have used the Framingham score to calculate a ten year statistical risk of having a coronary event and as my score came out at less than 15% then I would not have to have it checked again for 5 years.

They then go on to recommend a low fat diet and reducing intake of fatty , cholesterol rich foods such as cheese, butter, cream, crisps, chips, battered/crumbcoated fried food, pastries and ice cream.

Also - increase oily fish, veg and fruit - hmm sounding atkins friendly now

Exercise 30 mins at least 4 times a week

give up smoking - yay 8 weeks now!!

I am however going to book an appointment to get it retested in about 8 - 12 weeks to see the changes from being on Atkins.

Good idea to get a retest some weeks from now. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.
