  • Blood Pressure question.... HELP

I just had my annual physical and my blood pressure was up. I have never before in my life (through ups and downs in weight and different diets, stress, disasters, etc.) had high blood pressure.
Has anyone out there experienced this ? My DD says its because I'm eating more protein and not eating a balanced diet. I'm concerned and now doubting this WOE. HELP.....

Before anyone answers you they are probably going to want to know your numbers.. It could just be from running around this morning and being nervous about having your physical

hey Sandy... that's the thing.... nothing (I mean nothing) has ever affected my BP before. I mean I could be under the most incredible amount of stress and my BP was perfect. I'm also not at my highest weight right now... this is actually the weight at which my body likes to "rest" at for a while (I don't know why). My BP was 120/90 at the checkup. Usually its 110/70. My starting weight on Mar 12/07 was 198, my current weight is 186, I'm 5'4" and 52 yyF.

Did the doctor complain? Cause mine is usually more 140 over something and nothing is said...

            Solittletime,

One reading does not mean you have high blood pressure! Alot of variables.
More salt then normal the day before?
            White coat syndrome?
Any meds (that means OTC too!........alot of those can cause high blood pressure)?

IF you or your doctor are concerned then I would suggest monitoring it to see if this is a trend, or just an unusual reading. Was your doctor concerned? Does high blood pressure run in your family?

              Re: Blood Pressure question.... HELP

This WOE has helped lower my bp. Sometimes it just goes up as we get older..or hereditary and theres nothing u can do about it. But losing weight certainly helps most people.
Your bottom number is a little high...but it is perfectly normal to have fluctuations. If your dr didnt seem concerned than I wouldnt be. Just monitor it occasionally to see if it doesnt get any higher.
I never had high blood pressure either until this year (of course im much more ow than u are). Thats one of the reasons i started this WOE. Ive never heard eating more protein could cause it to go high....the only thing could be if u are consuming more sodium than u are used to?? Processed meats/cheeses/pork rinds etc??

              Good luck..and keep us updated.

thanks everyone for your feedback. I think you're right this could be just a blip and not necessarily a trend (hopefully). So I'm not going to sweat it... I'm going to stick with what I'm doing and just keep an eye on the sodium intake... cut out the obvious stuff I guess.

I went and did a little research on blood pressure...and yours is borderline...mine is too high..lol I haven't had it checked since I started Atkins..but will soon cause I have to go through a physical for my Life Insurance policy..

A friend of mine was borderline like you and all she did was start walking more and that helped her...

Exercise is a WONDERFUL way to lower BP. Prior to this WOE I was high, and much much higher then yours. Now........... I am fine! So, diet and exercise can play a huge part in bringing it down.

Yes... Bren took the words out of my mouth... you probably don't need to be worried at all and it could easily be a blip...but exercise is good for you, b/p issues or not... and it's a great way to bring the numbers down.

thanks for the great advice... I've been really trying to make the exercise more consistent, but it's challenging. Some days I'm just so exhausted after working 12 hours that it's all I can do to get myself into bed.... not an excuse just the way I feel.
