Hey all,

This is definitely a nasty question but I have to ask. Ever since I started the atkins program(4/29), I have been having light different smell to my urine. I still could tell it was urine but a weird smell... it's not as bad as urine, just different. So today(5/11 this morning), I went to go urinate and the smell as gone to crazy sharp smell. I told myself it's just the high concentration. But if i smell it in a hallway I wouldnt even know it was urine but it is. It's a strong strong strong smell. So I went to use the bathroom a few times(still a smell) then around 5pm, after drinking 80oz+ of water, it still smelled strong but it wasnt as bad as the first. I really dont know how to explain this but this smell is so different and strong. Please someone help me :O

Jamie, I'm not certain, but pretty sure that we lose a certain amount of our fat through our urine. Perhaps, that's what it is, fat loss. You're not experiencing any pain are you? Is it cloudy or dark?

no, no pain or cloudyness. Just stink. It's not dark or anything, just a very very very light yellow or even just clear depending on how much water i drank that day. Thanks for the fast reply and i hope it's just the fat

Jamie....this is from a medical standpoint only, but you do not lose fat in your urine. That would be a highly unusual finding. Lots of things can affect the odor of urine. Urine of people with a high level of ketosis may have a strong, sweet smell of acetone. (CAUTION: if you have diabetes, check with your doctor because this smell could be a sign of a serious diabetic condition called diabetic ketoacidosis which is completely different from the benign ketosis of Atkineers.) People who have a urinary tract infection can have a very foul odor to their urine. Some foods (eg: asparagus) produce characteristic urine odors and some medications can also cause odors.

I hope this helps....bottom line: if you are worried see your doctor for a urinalysis.

Mine was smelly at first..but it has seemed to clear up.. It was like my body was detoxing from all the bad stuff that was in it... If it doesn't clear up after a few days...maybe you should get it checked..

Many people notice a change in the was urine and sweat smell when on Atkins. It is rater common, but if it is something you are concerned about see your doctor.

The only time I have noticed a bad smell (or really, any smell at all) to my urine is when I had a UTI/kidney infection. Sometimes kidney infections don't cause pain when urinating, so if it continues, it's worth getting checked out.

Jamie, I hope you're still not experiencing any problems. If so, have you seen a doctor or called for an appointment? If you're urine is still strong smelling maybe you should consider that you may have an infection and see a doctor soon. Let me know how you're doing. O.K.

The smell hasn't been as bad as it was yesterday. I dont know what it is but if I smell tomorrow and the next day, I will go see a doctor. There is a wedding coming up next sunday and my days except for tuesday is my only open day so ill go see my doctor then if this problem is continuing. I still do not have any pains, just less smell which im happy about.

Strong urine, a metal taste in your mouth, lack of hunger, thirst etc. are all side effects of benign dietary ketosis. The process is normal when you are burning fat for energy.
Remember to drink your water!!!

Yep that is my "sign" that I am in ketosis. The smell changes to that strange smell you are talking about - and it never goes away unless I'm knocked out of ketosis. As long as you are feeling fine otherwise, I bet it is just a sign of ketosis!

Hey! Everything seems okay now which im very happy about. I dont know what it was but it's gone now. I hope that it wasnt the ketosis smell... if it was then COME BACK!!!! :P

yeah my weighing day was sunday and i only lost one lb last week but i am still greatful and happy that i lost 11 lbs in two weeks. one lb is better than none like most say I already feel like i have been losing weight since sunday tho. I drank about 100+oz of water today and i just checked my ketosis level with the strip and it shows the darkest color which means I will lose weight faster or as others say it is just tellin me im on ketosis. I never know which is true. I feel like when I check at night after drinkin all that water for the day, it really tells me what level im on since im very well hydrated and my urine isnt so concentrated. I wish i knew the truth! Thanks for checking on me. You all are very kind to me.

So are u saying the smell of ur urine changes when ur in ketosis??
