  • Gall Bladder Removal and Weight Gain

I went to dinner with my Mom and some other women who are in a women's motorcycle club together, last week. When dinner came, I noticed the woman across the table had removed the bun from her veggie burger. Seems her doctor put her on a low fat/low carb diet due to high cholesterol. My Mom chimed in and told her about how she did Atkins and lowered her cholesterol and lost weight. But that's not the point of my post.

While we chatted, she mentioned that ever since her gall bladder was removed, she has had ongoing issues with her weight. Well, this rang a bell with me. I had mine removed in 2003 and afterwards, was never able (until Atkins) to lose weight.. only gained it. I was curious if others on this board have had the same problem. I've also had issues with constant loose and bright yellow stools. Only after following this WOE did my color return to normal.. Sorry if this is TMI, but weightloss causes lots o' poopies.. lol!

Re: Gall Bladder Removal and Weight Gain

Well, I would like to blame my weight gain on my gall bladder removal, but unfortunately I've been struggling with my weight most of my life.

I got my gall bladder removed 23 years ago and since that time I was unsuccessful at losing weight. Not only that, but I had developed IBS which made me constantly have to go to the bathroom, pains in my tummy etc. I couldn't eat out and then drive anywhere, have lunch out while shopping, nothing like that. It certainly crimped my life but I adapted to it and worked around it the best I could.

I re-started Atkins on May 1 of this year and since have had no IBS symptoms at all anymore. I see this way of life as a miricle for me. First and foremost I can lead a normal life now, eat, shop, go out to dinner and feel fine, as long as I follow Atkins, and I have since May 1. So, this low carb way of eating has given me my life back PLUS an added bonus of losing weight. I'm not losing that fast, but thats okay since this will be my way of eating for the rest of my life.

    Take care

Re: Gall Bladder Removal and Weight Gain

Well, I had my gall bladder out after my son was born 8 years ago and I was wondering the same thing. I just weighed myself this morning and I've only lost 5 lbs in the first 2 weeks. I tried my own diet about 3 months agao and I lost VERY slowly as well. I guess we just need to resign ourselves to the fact that this may be our future due to gall bladder removal but it sure beats the pain I was in before I had it removed! I'm going to look on the internet when I get to work and see if there have been any studies done. I'll respond if I find anything!

Well, I couldn't find any scientific studies, but I read alot of posts on other web site complaining about the same thing! Sigh, not good. I'm not very happy about this.

Good to see that gall bladder issues don't increase with Atkins... rather the opposite.

I had my gall bladder removed several years ago........it was actually about a year before I started my Atkins Journey. I can honestly say I see no difference before or after. I lost successfully..........SLOW but successfully!

I had my gall bladder removed April 2005.. If anything...Atkins HELPS me.. I too suffer from IBS and when I eat the Atkins way I feel so much better..

While I would LIKE to blame my weight gains on my gall bladder..it isn't true..its what I put in my mouth
