Anyone heard of Adkins effecting your platelet count. A recent complete blood workup showed a low platelet count. Was retested and it is still low. Don't have a follow-up appointment until Sept. 11 and was anxious for an explanation. Any help would be helpful and if NOT I'll follow-up in case anyone else has a similar problem. Thanks for listening.

Re: HELP! Can Adkins cause low platelet count?
Good luck, and let us know. I have low red blood count-anemia--but they didn't say anything about my platelets, so I assume they're OK. I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem, so I hope it's just a temporary thing and all will be well with you.Caryl

Re: HELP! Can Adkins cause low platelet count?
Atkins does not have an affect on platelets. Diet is not one of the factors that causes platelets to be low or high.
Platelets are essential to blood clotting. Common causes of thrombocytopenia (low platelets) include infections, antibodies, prosthetic heart valves, hemorrhage. There are lots of other causes, too. Some people suffer from certain types of anemia, which can lower platelets. How low is the number? If it is 50,000-100,000--you may have prolonged bleeding if you cut yourself. Counts of 150,000-400,000 are usually considered normal. Tylenol and Asprin can sometimes cause low counts.
Hope this helps a little. If you tell me your number, maybe I can give you some more info.
