  • Atkins and Kidney problems?

I'm very new to Atkins, haven't actually started yet but will be next week. I've been told that I should not do Atkins because it could cause kidney failure. Can anyone give me some input? I don't need to invite any trouble. Just looking for some really good answers.

    Thank you

I'm hoping someone can help you out on this issue fluffy. I know Atkins gets lots of bad press for lots of things.

I'm not qualified to answer this though.

It's probably a good idea to think in terms of Ketosis. People with low carb diets really have problem with the idea of staying in prolonged ketosis which usually involves consuming less that 130g of carbs a day. Prolonged ketosis can lead to high levels of uric acid and that in turn is a risk factor for Gout and Kidney Stones. If a person is suffering from a form of kidney disease, the high levels of uric acid could have a more severe affect.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you look around the internet there are many, many sites that are attacking low-carb diets and then turning around trying to pump up their own diet and what THEY think is best. Invariably they always end up saying you need to avoid the sugars, flours, rice and bread and eat the good carbs, like veggies and fruits and grains which is exactly what the Atkins's preaches. I hope that helps.

IF and I repeat IF you have any kidney challenges you are not advised to do Atkins!

IF you suspect you have kidney problems then I would get to a doctor to get checked out! Even so, before starting any way of eating you should have a physical and get your doctors approval.

and please read your copy of the book. Dr Atkins addresses a whole host of protential problems and tells you the correct way of dealing with them.

one thing he does suggest is seeing your doctor prior to starting his plan.

Ditto what the others have said... particularly the "look to the book" and "drink up" tips.

                Re: Atkins and Kidney problems?

This has to be the second biggest fallacy about Atkins out there - second only to us drinking bacon grease from teacups.

As noted above, if you have existing kidney issues, a ketogenic diet has the potential to exacerbate existing issues. It does not cause kidney problems.

This is why Dr. Atkins strongly recommended everyone get a thorough physical before starting this ...or *any*... plan.
