  • Irregular sleeping schedule

    Hello all!

For the past several months, my sleeping schedule has been out of whack. Sometimes it'll be a reverse, sleep all day/up all night sort of thing. Sometimes I'll wake up in the morning, but I ALWAYS end up feeling tired and having to sleep/nap for good chunks of the day.

I always seem to feel tired, even after I've gotten 12 hours of sleep. Up until I started Atkins earlier this week I didn't get much activity and was thinking maybe my slow metabolism was to blame. But I started Atkins & joined a gym Sunday. I've only been to the gym once since Monday, and right after that one time, I promptly went home and slept.

I've just been pretty confused about this. Wondering if my general fatigue and tiredness will improve, or if it's some kind of medical disorder.

    Re: Irregular sleeping schedule

I have a similar problem. I work from home on the PC most nights from 8pm-2am. So my sleep pattern is irregular to say the least. Plus 2 kids to take care of. I sleep when I can.

I am not a doctor but I feel that grabbing a couple of hours here and there just doesnt work. I think the body needs enough sleep at regular intervals. But unfortuately, my schedule doesnt allow it. I know my probs are from working all night.

If you are concerned please check with your doctor. That way you could know for sure.

      Re: Irregular sleeping schedule

I too have very irregular sleep. Insomnia and just generally not enough time to sleep. Plus I wake every couple of hours too..

It doesn't do much for ones energy levels, that for certain; and apparently good sleep helps with weight loss, but just wanted to reassure you that I did manage to get to goal just fine, despite sleep issues (ongoing). I'm sure you will to.

Asking the doc about it can't hurt though.

        Re: Irregular sleeping schedule

Wish I could tell you where I read this, but it's been a while. Basically, they said our ancestors were used to sleeping in "shifts"....they'd sleep a couple of hours, go on watch duty, sleep again. Supposedly, as long as you sleep long enough to go into deep REM you should be OK.
That said, I haven't slept normally since I started working nights. I live on coffee to stay awake at night and have a heck of a time sleeping in daylight. It's been 4+ years....so much for acclimating. On vacation, I immediately fell back into sleeping at night, but couldn't sleep for more than 5 or 6 hours. Now, I sleep about 4 hours in the morning and 2 before work.....unless I get 5 or so in the morning and then I can't take a nap later(like now). ACK!!!
