    Re: !Migraines!

Sounds to me like it was more of a withdrawl headache if thats what gets rid of it?

I'm a long time sufferer of migraines, i generally dont leave my bed for 3-4 days and the eyes cant open and im always being sick, i dont get them very often but when i do WHAM!

I cant really say what works, if it worked i wouldnt suffer for 3 days right?? i use Migraleve but more so lots and lots of water, just gotta sit them out!

Promise..if you have insurance I would see a neurologist(SP?) there are good drugs out there for Migraines.. One lasting a few days is too long.. I don't want to scare you but my husband had a mini stroke from having a migraine..so they can be serious.

I use to get Migraines really bad when I was taking birth control pills... I have had to learn to stay away from what triggers them.. Scented things...candles especially that are perfume smells... I can burn candles like vanilla's. Cigarette smoke is bad for me too...

My daughter and husband get migraines and if they cant get rid of them they eventually throw up and stay in a dark room for a few days. They both say that Advil works much better than tylenol and a little bit of caffine is exactly what they do too. For some reason it helps dont know why. Not much of a suggestion but thought I would share. Hope you feel better soon.

My husband takes Imitrex for his migraines. It always works within 10 minutes IF he takes it as soon as the headache is starting. Imitrex has been a miracle for us.

            Re: !Migraines!

I have had horrid migraines most of my life since puberty and over the years I have found a few "concoctions that if I am diligent or catch them early works for me. When All else fails I have a script I use but it's wicked expensive so I try to avoid it if possible. Caffiene works for sure and if it wasn't bad for our WOL then it would be a fine tool to use ........ try these alternatives and yes it sometimes sounds like a lot but works and my doc said was fine ........

3 advil and 2 tylenol at the same time ......... take a hot shower as hot as you can stand it and then step out of the shower and lay down for about 30 minutes. Most of the time I can nip even a good migraine with this unless it has gone to far allready

Another thing to try is extra strength excedrine and Tylenol together again the hot shower and a 30 minutes nap .........

Either one of these can also be combined with a caffinated soda or cup of coffee and will work even better, but again try and not use the caffiene.

Almost always if a migraine has gotten to the spots and nausea stage these things will certainly help but not get rid of it entirely. If you at that place you might need to consider seeing your doc about meds and in the future when you feel one coming take the above right away to ward it of before it starts getting too much power. The meds I take are called Maxalt 10 and for me are a wonder drug but will knock me out for a good 3-4 hours ........

I hope something there helps a little

            Heidi

Here's a little Web MD information about why caffiene helps headaches .......

            How Does Caffeine Treat Headaches?

Caffeine is a common ingredient in many prescription and over-the-counter headache medications (see list below). Caffeine additives make pain-relievers 40% more effective in treating headaches. Caffeine also helps the body absorb headache medications more quickly, bringing faster relief. By adding caffeine and, in turn, taking less medication, you can reduce the risk for potential side effects and possible drug addiction.

              Re: !Migraines!

Thanks For All The Replies Everyone! i have been to a Neuroligist... seen and E.N.T... MANY doctors... and taken So Many Different Pills my head is still Spinning! when i got my 1st Migraine back in 2003 i thought i was going to Die! i thought i must have a Brain Tumor or something... and after Many Tests... they said NOTHINGS WRONG... EVERYTHINGS COMING UP "NORMAL"... yeah right... Normal... i have tried almost every single pill they make for Migraine Relief... Over The Counter AND Prescription... the only thing that EVER helped me is something called PAXIL CR... its usually used to treat Depression, but also helps with Migaraines... i started taking this about 6 months ago and it IS helping them not come So Often... but when i do get them... they are still Soooooooooo BAD! AND I GET AT LEAST 1 A WEEK!!! even Imitrex doesnt work for me... the only thing that really ever helped me was taking 2 ALEVE with a Cup of Black Coffee right at the Onset of my Migraine... this helps "sometimes"... and sometimes it doesnt... most of the time i get them when im at work, so i have to leave... DRIVE HOME which is 25 miles... and then lay down and try to sleep... Vicodin help a little too, but i cant take them till i get home... they help me sleep, and if im asleep i dont feel the pain... sometimes they last 1 day and sometimes like this one lasted from Sunday till Tuesday... i went back to work today... im still a little fuzzy, but im ok... Hopefully 1 day SOON i will go from Perimenopause into Menopause, Stop Having My Period and HOPEFULLY stop having these Migraines... Everyone ive seen thinks its Hormore Related... ive even been on Prempo (HRT) but got off of that when i found out the Paxil CR is working...
Hopefully One Day Soon I Will Be Migraine Free! Until Then I Will Continue To Pray For Mercy!

Hugs to all you migraine sufferers. I don't have any suggestions/answersfor you I'm afraid... I just sympathise. I've always suffered from headaches, but only rarely get real migraines (thank heavens), so I know how horrid they can be.

I sleep mine off. Take about 800 mg of ibuprofen (Advil) with a little food and go to bed, next morning they are almost always gone.

                      Re: !Migraines!

I've never been officially diagnosed with migraines. But I know I have them because I have spoken with enough people who do. But I am lucky (so I am told) because I get a precursor aura (spots, lights, tunnel vision) as a warning that one is coming on. IF I can get enough extra strength Excedrin in me early enough, I can manage it. These I would get once or twice a year, but I would get smaller headaches about three times a week. I pop Excedrin like candy, I have small bottles everywhere in my life, all three medicine cabinets at home, both cars, and my briefcase. But since I started Atkins I can count on one hand the headaches I have had. Until I fell off two years ago, then after a couple of months they started up again, not quite as many but at least one a week. Now that I am back on, not a single headache. I think mine might have all been related to blood sugar fluctuations, but I'll never know. But no headaches is a mighty motivating reason to stay on plan, at least for me.

I don't know if this answered anything, but just more info to digest.

                        Re: !Migraines!

I get the "visual" migraines too - blind spots, and twinkly rainbow-y streaks across my vision, but now that I think about it, I have not had one since July (when I started Atkins). Hmmm- coincidence? I don't get them often, so it is not out of the question to go this long without, but I will start paying more attention now that you've pointed this out.

                            Re: !Migraines!

I haven't had a migraine since I started Atkins, on induction and when I gave up caffiene, over a year ago. My induction flu manifested itself as a horrible red migraine (I usually get "white" ones) and it was gone the next day. Like Jroche, being free of migraines encourages me to stay on plan!

I believe mine are/were food-related, and caffiene-related. Caffiene can actually CAUSE migraines, so I would not use caffiene as a migraine-cure. You probably get a migraine when your body begins to go through withdrawal, and once you get more caffiene into your body the cycle begins again.

The hot shower tip helps, as does "piggybacking" dosages of two different types of pain relievers, such as taking 2 aleve, then taking 2 motrin.
