  • Strange Cramps

Have you ever had a cramp in your calf (charlie horse) or a cramp in your foot where your toes actually start to curl up on each other? Well, 3 times in the last month, I have had this same type of cramp in my upper left stomach area. It happens at rest and while seated - twice in the car while stretching forward and once at work while stretching forward. I have NEVER had these before. I take a multi-vitamin daily, but am wondering if this might be caused by some other deficiency? I know lack of potassium can cause cramps. Perhaps I should add a banana to my daily diet? (I'm at a point in OWL where I could try this).

    Thank you! - Jen

    Re: Strange Cramps

Pumpkin is very high in potassium as is avocado, squash (the ones allowed at your stage of this diet)

these are also of a pretty good content

    celery
    cauliflower
    broccoli
    mushrooms
    bell peppers
    asparagus

try and add these things into your daily menu, not all of them of course!

What rung are you on? you seem to be quite high seeing as you only started this WOE 2 months ago!

Never knew avocado was high in potassium. Tks Emma.

Hope your cramping issues get solved with a few of these dietary additions Jen.

Thank you for the info. I eat those all ready, and will try to increase consumption of a couple.

As far as the question about what rung I'm on, I skipped a couple: Dairy since I ate cheese on induction and lost, no other interest in anything else from there, and Nuts since I ate macadamias during induction and lost (found out later that was a no-no). I don't drink so there goes that rung. I'm at Legumes. . . and inching towards Other Fruits.

Sally, serving for serving, avocado has MORE potassium than does a banana!! They are an excellent food choice for us!

Jay--spinach also is an excellent source of potassium. However being that you are virtually skipping the dairy rung...I'd take a guess that your cramps might not be from lack of potassium, but for lack of CALCIUM. Muscles need the minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium for the contraction and relaxation of the muscles. When you are deficient in any one or more is when you'll have troubles. http://www.bodyandfitness.com/Inform...h/legcramp.htm

Calcium. . . I do take fiber that has calcium added, but I will try an actual calcium supplement and see if that helps.

Thanks again to you all! - Jen
