so my wife was all upset because she thought i had high cholesterol....and my BUN/creatinine ratio was a little low (whatever that is). so i have been reading and the best foods to help one lower cholesterol include fish, brussel spouts, walnuts and oatmeal. well....the first three i know i can indulge in. so this is what i am gonna do.......get that cholesterol number down some or my wife will worry me right out of the home no doubt LOL.

Re: lowering cholesterol......
Actually Christopher, following the Atkins diet should make your cholesterol level drop anyway. I had family members worry about the health risks of me following Atkins when I started, and to prove them wrong I would go to the docs ever 3-4 months for some blood work. Each time my cholesterol came down. Needless to say they dont worry anymore.
Good luck with it, but I dont think you need it. You are doing great.

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!
I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Re: lowering cholesterol......
chris, i just had my chol. check yesterday. rich is correct. eating this way is super! check my stats journal for yesterday. my ratio is fantastic, my hdl went from 28 before atkins to a 77, well over the suggested numbers. although my total chol. is higer, this does not mean all is bad.
my blood sugar is 90 and this is also very good.
rich, what are your last numbers? did you record them somewhere where we can see the progress?

Re: lowering cholesterol......
jimmie....those look like pretty good numbers. i would have to get mine out again and check them over. my numbers were not so bad but just creeping a little higher than they were a few years ago. everything is all pretty .....hmmmm, well i would have to look at them again. my BUN/creatinine ratio was lower then the normal range.....but i still dont know exactly what that ratio means or for what it is indicitive. i think all is well!! thanks for reaching out to me on a subject that is/was of concern. i have been losing weight and eating rather well, getting in a ton of exercise.......and all my days seem a little bit better now

just increase your life insurance policy and she'll stop nagging
sorry, couldn't help it
The thing that makes oatmeal a supposed cholesterol reducer is the soluble fiber. flaxseed is high in that. enjoy

Re: lowering cholesterol......
Niacin and red rice yeast are great at lowering cholesterol. I take 2 capsules of flush-free niacin a day and have for several years. My last blood work was
HDL 103
LDL 109
Ratio: .86 (anything less than 3 is considered very low risk for CHD)

Re: lowering cholesterol......
BUN Creatinine ratios are used as an indicator of renal function. If the ratio is high it can be indicitive of kidney disease. Low ratios, unless very low, are of no consequence, but can occur in malnourished people or those not eating enough protein and also with over-hydration and muscle injury. Very rarely they can be associated with some forms of cancer - but there would be lots of other abnormalities in such a situation.
Owners of racing dogs and horses routinely measure bun and creatinine and their relative ratios as a means of assessing muscle recovery following racing. Creatinine is elevated in the body following muscular exertion, BUN isn't. So this will lead to a reduced ratio, which should resolve naturally as muscles recover.Kate
