  • Loose Skin?

    Ameteur question......

I have been watching those reality shows where they have the 600 lb people and they have loose skin after they lose all that weight.

So going down 50 lbs....that's not really that much right??? I mean, does anyone have loose skin from the weight loss? All your before and after pics look as though everything just tightened back up like it was before.

AND I am worried about the sagging of 'the girls' after the weight loss....really worried.

I am looking for all comments on skin and weight loss.

    Re: Loose Skin?

I have lost just over 50lbs and don't, so far, have much loose skin. however I have about the same again to lose and I imagine I will have more when I lose more. But I'll take it over fat!!

I think time helps this. I know people who have lost a lot of weight (not hundreds of pounds gone, but significant amounts) and kept it off, and they tell me that the skin does tighten up again but that it can take up to a couple of years to happen.

Plus it's a lot to do with age. If you are in your 40's or 50's, even if you manage to return to the slim weight of your early 20's you are never going to have the same body.

Thats something that makes me paranoid also, as it stands i have none, however i catch myself checking parts of me out that look as though theres gonna be loose skin there... but nothing thus far. Like Kate, i'll take lose skin over fat anyday.

Whether you'll get any? who knows, it depends on age, skin elasticity, lots of things... exercise sure helps and some say dry brushing does also.

A lot of times you can prevent loose skin if you work out while losing the weight. It is not always the case. Sometimes the elasticity <like a rubber band> of the skin is just destroyed and can't bounce back, other times it will over time. It has a lot to do with health in general as well, of the skin, age, length its been stetched out.

As far as the girls I would not worry to omuch about that. Keep em haltered as much as posible during the day and EVEN while sleeping. That should help same as well. The less time they spend free the less sagging there will be jut in general and that is for everyone not just people losing weight.

I did hear somewhere, not sure ho much truth t holds but, apparently TOO much loose skin can cause some sort of health issue although I don't see how but ok... Anyway I can't remember if some insurances cover the amount for surgically removing what doesn't go back or not but you be rest assued I am gonna find out with mine. Just to be safe. That way IF I do en up with loose skin ill at least know if I need to save money or not. This procedure of removing loose skin is also called a TUMMY TUCK or ABDOMINOPLASTY.

            Re: Loose Skin?

I'll be the first to say yes to your question I guess I have lost 53 pounds and I have loose skin mostly in my belly but I have to add that I am 41 have had 7 children and my stomach will never be the same ......... when I was 50 lbs heavier it was supported by a lot of fat but now just hangs there and I'm sure as I lose 30-40 more it will only hang more. I am planning a tummy tuck in the fall and as a previous poster questioned there are some all though not major health issues. The biggest being yeast infections when you have sagging skin no air gets under there and you can have issues with "weepy skin" where it produces fluids and gets very smelly and very bad yeast issues yes even with daily cleaning it can be an issue but worse for those who don't have great personal hygeine. I have several of the things that prone me to having more saggy skin then most one is like I said seven pregnancies, second being I have very dry and not very elastic skin (tons of stretch marks) I have been heavy for many years and skin thats been stretched that long doesn't go back as quickly either. I have never done dry brushing but have recetnly looked into it and am going to start doing it. I excercise everyday and use skin rejuvination creams as well .......... Like everyone said I'll take sag over fat anyday!

                Re: Loose Skin?

I've lost about 95 pounds so far, and I do have a tiny bit of loose skin. Nothing horrific like I belong in a freakshow, but my tummy and my arms do show a bit of wear. BUT, as I continue to lose, it continues to "shrink back" at its own pace. It's a slow process, but it's happening!

Exercising has been a lifesaver, and I think that's the main reason why I don't LOOK as if I used to weigh 270+. It has helped with elasticity, and I have something to "fill" my skin--muscles! Dry-brushing also helps (and feels incredible).

Bottom line? Keep your skin moisturized, drink your water, exercise, take your nutritional supplements and vitamins.

I've lost more than a 100 lbs, gained a few back and lost it again and I don't have much loose skin at all. My stretch marks on my stomach (from 4 pregnancies) are wrinkled up but it's not too bad.

Thats a very interesting article and while it does make sense to a certain extent I'm not sold ......... You have to take into consideration that the author is unwilling to show or supply any thing to prove his claims and the point of the atricle is to get you to buy his book. I'm not saying he's wrong but you always have to consider those things as well ........ It peeked my interest enough so I will do some more research.

I think the most important part of the article is about muscle loss. You could be at your goal weight, but if you lost 20lbs of muscle in the process you are still going to have extra fat.

The best thing to do is exercise and lift. Many women worry about bulking, but if it where that easy female bodybuilders wouldn't take hormones. I know several women that weightlift every other day and are very serious, and the just look toned. It is hard enough for us men to bulk up with muscles and we have all the hormones naturally for it!

                        Good luck!

                            Re: Loose Skin?

I must say I think age and how long you were overweight are big factors. I believe at your age, you will not have any problem if you exercise. I have lost big amounts of weight in the past and not had a problem, but this last time (at over 50) I had a considerable more amount of loose skin (nothing too gross). That really did bum me, but as everyone says "I will take the loose skin over fat". Most of it is where no one else can see it. In a way, what can I expect after losing and gaining and losing and gaining. Poor body. The top parts of my legs had more than I expected, but this time I am going to exercise more. I need to try that dry brushing since everyone says it works. I guess the moral of the story is - lose it and keep it off while you are young.
