Hi, I just read a 07 post, and there was something about eating the proper ratio of protein (as in, not more than 30%) What is that? Are we not allowed to eat more than 30 % protein?

Re: HELP, Ratio Question?
It is a common misconception that Atkins is a high-protein diet, when in fact, it is a high-fat one. If you read Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, he writes on page 110 that "58% of protein will become glucogenic amino acids, i.e. convertible to glucose, but only 10% of fat will become its glycerol portion, which is similarly convertible."
So basically, more of the excess protein will convert to sugar compared to fat. And since it is the sugar that we are trying to limit in this WOE, we do not want to have more protein compared to fat. The other benefit to eating more fat is the satiety factor...fat makes you feel satified and full, therefore, you'll tend to eat less.
If you really want to follow Atkins' way of eating correctly, I HIGHLY recommend reading his book, Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution. It will make your journey of weightloss and good health a lot easier!

Re: HELP, Ratio Question?
The general thought is that on induction you should be getting your calories 65% from fat, 5% from carbs and 30% from protein. That's not in the book, it is from some research done by some university (sorry so vague, can't recall the details) by analysing Dr A's menus.
As you add in more carbs while going through OWL, pre-maintenance and finally on maintenacne, your carbs go up somewhat, your fat goes down somewhat but the protein stays at 30%.
As Biogeek says, ths mistaken belief that Atkins is a high protein diet is wrong, it is a moderate protein diet.Kate
