  • Prescription drug interaction?

Hi all! Just started up Atkins again and have heard from some sources that drugs such as Lisinopril and Effexor (Both of which I take daily) can alter weight loss, would like to hear some opinion's on this subject.

Hi Free-coh! Welcome Dr Atkins does say that certain drugs affect weight loss, but I have no idea about the ones you mention. Hopefully, someone who knows will come along, but you may want to post your question in the "Health" section.

290 lbs. on 11/02/07 Goal: 145 lbs. or size 14 whichever comes first!

      Hi, Free-coh

I will first say this - it is best to discuss this with your own doctor, and see what his/her opinion is.

Having said that - it is has been my experience that not all of the doctors who prescibe these drugs, know that much about them. I was put on Effexor in late 2004 by my urologist after a very difficult surgery/recovery. He was a brilliant urologist, but when it came to Effexor, I don't think he had a clue. After a few months on this, I was terribly unhappy. It didn't make me feel better, and I was having severe trouble staying on plan. I just chalked it up to depression.

The next time that I visited my primary care doc, I explained to him how I as doing on the Effexor. He told me, that it is his opinion that Effexor makes a person crave carbs. What?! You see, my urologist had no opinion on this, because he just didn't know. My regular doc happens to be 100% pro-Atkins, and recommends it to his patients, so he is interested in this sort of thing, and is knowledgeable about it.

Of course, the rub is this - if you want to stop taking it, you need to get with your doc and discuss your concerns. It's not always easy to find the medicine that will work best for you. What works for one person, can drive another person absolutely mad. So it is very important to get with your doc and discuss your options. Good luck!
