  • To lose at least 10lb in ten minutes

Listening to a commentator on Olympic rowing yesterday I learned a competitor could loose 5-6Kg (11-13lb) in sweat in a race.

Let's suppose a 6ft rower weighs 100Kg (220lb of solid muscle), that's close to 5% body weight - just imagine it!
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Male 6 ft 3in 60 years old. Married 28 years.
Began Atkins March 04 at 260lb, reduced to 203lb by April 07 and maintained.
    Blood Pressure Mar 04 147/94 . Jun 04 121/74 . Dec 04 119/72 . Jan 06 126/71 . Dec 07 110/70
Atkins makes exercise mandatory - I took up cycling - see last pics at 203lb.

    Wow. Interesting fact.
I heard a race car driver say his biggest weight loss was 17 lbs. in a race due to the heat and the physical work out of driving.

Wow. The Americans must be copying the English in their commentary. I heard the exact same factoid while watching the delayed telecast of rowing today! 10 pounds is an impressive amount, especially considering that a race runs less than 10 minutes!

As to gman's comment, I heard similar information, especially living here in the heart of NASCAR country. Someone once asked about how drivers handle bathroom breaks, and while there is apparently an option for that when necessary, the general consensus was that they rarely have to go as they sweat out all the liquid in their system during the race!

That was the same question I asked my DH last NASCAR season. His reply, "Why do you think they make a pit stop to change their tires so much?" Okay, so I still looked preplexed until I got it....pit stop. Okay, so it was funny at the time.
