  • Try to stop drinking soda - READ THIS MOTIVATION

I ran across this article on-line and they referenced Prevention magazine. I have always struggled with giving up my Diet Pepsi. It has been much easier after I read this...... maybe it will be motivation for others!

Scientists in Boston found that drinking one or more regular or diet colas every day doubles your risk of metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions, including high blood pressure, elevated insulin levels, and excess fat around the waist, that increase your chance of heart disease and diabetes. One culprit could be the additive that gives soda its caramel color, which upped the risk of metabolic syndrome in animal studies. Scientists also speculate that soda drinkers regularly expose their taste buds to natural or artificial sweeteners, conditioning themselves to prefer and crave sweeter foods, which may lead to weight gain, says Vasan S. Ramachandran, M.D., a professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and the study's lead researcher. Better choices: Switch to tea if you need a caffeine hit. If it's fizz you're after, try sparkling water with a splash of juice. By controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels, preventing diabetes, and not smoking, you can add 6 to 9 1/2 healthy years to your life.

Just in my personal experience with this diet I think they are right. I found that when I began drinking diet soda again my weight loss stalled and I started to have cravings again. Best to just stick with good old water!

I have had 2 Diet Rite sodas since I started Atkins (Jan 5, 2009) -- both times I haven't been able to finish them because they are painful to drink...I use to wake up in the morning and during the course of a day would drink 1 to 2 POTS of coffee by myself, 2 large glasses of whole milk and drink 4-6 Diet Rite sodas a day. Maybe once a week (twice at most) I'd drink a glass of water - usually when we went out to eat because I hate paying the price for soda and ice tea at a restaurant.

Now I have 2 maybe 3 CUPS of decaf coffee and 150 ounces of water a day. I have lost 7 inches off my waist and more off other part of my body. As long as I drank soda I couldn't loose and couldn't figure out why...Diet Rite says NO sodium, NO sugar and NO nuthing else....but it held my weight steady and made it so much easier to gain because I was pouring sweet stuff down my throat all day.

I am so happy to have found this WOE and have no desire to go back to what I was doing before.

I adore being free of my vanilla coke and diet vanilla coke habits. Freedom is a wonderful thing. Filling your water at the tap for free instead of popping a buck fifty for a soda is wonderful too.

I agree. Soda is a huge part of the obesity epidemic all around us these days! Trade it in for healthier habits and a healthy body!

Gee, you have given me something really to ponder! I have a Diet RC, or Coke--either with Spenda about once a day. That may explain my renewed cravings for fruit which was the beginnings of my last downfall. I'll go the water routine. Thankfully with Atkins, I've lost my taste for coffee and drink green, black, or herbal teas along with plenty of good old water! Mary

wow, for starters i don't drink soda on regular basis (i don't think even once a month applies), however being on this diet, and how sometimes I "crave" something sweet, I'm reaching for that diet soda... I've had a few since i started and reading this, reminded me of (I believe) the first me I did this and stuck to it. During that time is when I met my husband, so we went out to restaurants, movies, etc and about the only thing i did different was the diet soda, and it definetely slowed down to the point of me getting frustrated and "giving it up".
I'm going to def. remember this next time I'm reaching for that diet soda.
