  • gout and low carbing

Is it OK for my husband to do a modified low carb diet if he has gout? It was recommended when he was diagnosed to try Weight Watcher's. He got no relief what so ever AND he was hungry AND he ended up gaining weight. That program did not work for him at all and I have never seen anyone so hungry. The low carb diet worked so well for him in the past (lost 40 pounds.) Just wondering what modifications he could make and still lose weight while not aggravating his gout.

    Thanks!

    Re: gout and low carbing

I had been getting gout for about 20 years and for prevention was taking Allopurinol daily to reduce the uric acid in my blood.

I initially thought that doing Atkins would set off my gout, but it didn't. In fact, once I had lost 20 pounds through this WOE and daily walking, I asked my doctor if I could quit the Allopurinol. He said it was worth a try, so I stopped taking it and haven't had any gout attacks since.

So your husband might want to give it a try. But whether he gets gout attacks may depend on what he eats. For meat, I eat mostly chicken and fish, maybe have red meat once or twice a week (red meat affects some gout sufferers), so I may have that going for me.

    Good luck.
