  • Kidney stones and atkins?

I have a question.......back in November I started the atkins diet and within a week I developed a 3mm Kidney stone. It was the worst pain imaginable. I first started the diet last year and was successful (and no kidney stones) but unfortunately gain some weight back. I've just started Induction and drinking at least 2-2.5 liters of water a day to keep my kidneys flushed and to prevent another stone. Does anyone know if this is common to develop a kidney stone during the diet? and what types of foods should I limit?

I think kidney stones take awhile to develop so the fact that you passed them now is just a coincidence. Drink your water and talk to your doctor. Sugar, animal products, sodium, calcium and vitamin C may or may not aggravate your type of stones. I would stick to Atkins, but I would keep on the low side with the protein and cheese.

As deserthorn said, kidney stones take some time to develop. You don't start Atkins this week and bang!, a kidney stone forms by next week. In fact, the "Atkins - kidney stones" association is one of the fallacies surrounding this way of eating.

What kind of stones do you have (calcium, uric acid, struvite, cystine)? Dr. Atkins writes in his book that people with severe kidney problems should not follow any phase of Atkins, unless they are recommended to do so by the doctor.
