Want to live longer? Cut back on red meat - CNN.com

That caught my eye on CNN tonight. I eat equal amounts of chicken/fish/red meat.

I may have to cut back onthe red meat. What do you all think.?

In the end I think the benefits of losing the weight may be better than the risk from red meat but this article has me worried.

Look nowadays they say everything is bad. I LOVE a good steak but I do find that red meat kind of bogs me down for a day or so after. I feel sluggish, my digestion stalls and the scale won't budge. So I am eating more fish and chicken. Don't think the news would sway me though.

I know that I eat too much ham and sausage and I've been cutting back on them but now I think I'll cut back even more and add more fish instead.

My diet choices would be so much easier if I could eat shellfish but I'm allergic to them. Oh, well.

Re: Reduce Red Meat to Live Longer

Always have to worry about studies like that. Perhaps the people who ate red meat - ate a lot of burgers - meaning they really ate a lot of starchy carb and that may be the reason for the discrepancy. Perhaps there were other things going on with the red meat - they barbecued and drank a lot of beer and used a lot of barbecue sauce with it?

I read that the the release said the meat eaters were less well educated which is interesting. They may have other habits which caused the effects that the study claims from red meat.

Adding I have had a closer look at the study and found that
        A) They did not differentiate between unprocessed and processed meat - so under red meat they counted things like pizza, burger, wieners, sandwich meats etc. (I think this is major flaw with the study)
        and
B)According to the study, the "red meat eaters" (which may have been pizza pop eaters since the study does not differentiate) were significantly fatter, less educated, smoked more, exercised less, consumed more calories, ate fewer fruits and veggies, took fewer vitamins/supplements.

        And like the article says
"What we need to keep in mind about this study is that it does not prove that red meat causes increased death; it simply shows an association," she says. "The study relied on people's recall of what they typically eat, which does not always match what they actually consumed."

          Read Dr. Mike's Blog...

Meat and mortality | The Blog of Michael R. Eades, M.D.

At the same time that this paper appeared, showing increased red meat consumption to be tied to a slight increased risk of death (and showing that those subjects eating white meat had less risk), a couple of other papers came out in the online pre-publication section of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN), arguably the world’s most prestigious nutritional scientific journal. These two AJCN papers saw the light of day at around the same time as this highly-publicized study on meat and mortality, but demonstrated the opposite results. They got no press coverage whatsoever. Which proves what I’ve been saying all along: the press is biased against meat in general, and especially against red meat. Knowing this, careful readers should take anything negative thing the media reports about red meat with an enormous grain of salt.

Re: Reduce Red Meat to Live Longer

well i would be really messed up if i had to cut out red meat. I cant eat eggs, fish and chicken make me sick. I have been a red meat eater my whole life. I do eat pork on occassion. I didnt feel the greatest before atkins, but learning to eat differently. I have no real aches and pains, i also noticed that my sinuses have cleared up. I think its the stuff we ate with the red meat not so much the red meat itself. How many had burgers with out the buns and sides, fries onion rings etc, or a steak with out steak sause ( hubby uses that by the gallons..gross). I feel healthy, i dont have brain fog, i have energy i have been on atkins for 23 days eating only red meat cheeses water and the allowed veggies etc and i feel awesome.

I agree with liv and matawguro. And if Dr. Atkins and my doctor says its ok than im cool with it. But if it would make you feel more comfortable by all means limit your intake. Its important to lose weight but its important to have peace of mind as well.

I am a vegetarian and I applaud this. lol i usually leave my own beliefs out of a lot of things. 17 Benefits of Being a Vegetarian - Associated Content - associatedcontent.com
i recomend this site for you. im not harping in saying you should go all out on being veg. but this will help you make a decision for yourself.

when i became a vegetarian (2 years ago) the first thing i noticed was oh no i cant eat fast food. which in turn was a fabulous thing for me. without meat in my diet i noticed my skin cleared up from acne, my body felt cleaner, my digestive track was better, i had no more heart burn and i had fun being more creative with my meals. (for example for dinner i love making tacos out of morningstar veggie burgers and seasoning them and loading tons of veggies onto my tacos but instead of using tortillas i used lettuce instead and made wraps.)
i love this lifestyle. even cutting down on meat will help you physically

                      good luck with everything!
