    Cardiac arrhythmia (also dysrhythmia) is a term for any of a large and heterogeneous group of conditions in which there is abnormal electrical activity in the heart. The heart beat may be too fast or too slow, and may be regular or irregular.

    Some arrhythmias are life-threatening medical emergencies that can result in cardiac arrest and sudden death. Others cause symptoms such as an abnormal awareness of heart beat (palpitations), and may be merely annoying. Still others may not be associated with any symptoms at all, but predispose toward potentially life-threatening stroke or embolus.

    Some arrhythmias are very minor and can be regarded as normal variants. In fact, most people will sometimes feel their heart skip a beat, or give an occasional extra strong beat neither of these is usually a cause for alarm.[1]

    Recently on another forum, I was chatting to some other guy who claimed to have tried the Atkins diet some years ago. he said that while it did work for him, it was "too strict", and that he lost 20 pounds initially but ended up gaining 30 back, and was in worse shape than before. Now that sounds perfectly normal because i think many of us second-timers have experienced something similar! But what caught my attention was that he then said the second time he attempted low carb, he experienced minor cardiac arrhythmia symptoms during induction. (he then went on to say that the diet did not work as well as it did before, said something about how the human body 'learns' about diet patterns and makes it less effective).

    This caught my attention because I remember a few years ago, i *may* have experienced something similar to this arrhythmia. However, and this is crucially important, i do NOT remember whether I was on Atkins or not. It may have occurred when i was binging on potato chips, which were my fallacy. I do faintly remember that at the time, i sort of passed it off as heartburn, and then vowed to cut off the chips addiction for good before i really do get a heart attack someday. It felt like exactly how wikipedia described it, i think i felt a couple of strong thumping heart beats in succession, then back to normal. I remember at the time i did a search but most symptoms of irregular heartbeat were things like dizzyness, nausea, chest discomfort, chest pains, etc, none of which i had, so i didn't take much notice. So today, i did another google search on cardiac arryhythmia, and i found this joke of a website called AtkinsExposed. Here is an article:

    Most people aren't able to remain on the Atkins Diet long enough to develop osteoporosis, kidney damage or hardening of the arteries. Sixteen year-old high school student Rachel Elizabeth Huskey only lasted seven weeks.

    Rachel had a crush on a boy in her church. So she started the Atkins Diet to lose weight. In part because she was so nauseated on the diet, she lost 16 pounds. She was hoping being thinner would make her more popular at school. After a brief carbohydrate relapse, she began again "very strictly"[404] but could only stick with it this time for 9 days.

    In history class, amidst cheering fellow students for acing a tough question, she collapsed without warning. And then she died. Frenzied attempts to resuscitate her failed.[405] Her doctors blame the Atkins Diet.

    The kidney uses minerals such as potassium and calcium to help rid one's body of toxins like ketones. People on the Atkins Diet are urinating these minerals away. And critically low levels in the blood of these electrolytes can lead to fatal cardiac arrhythmias--lethal heart rhythms. Rachel was on the Atkins Diet, was found on autopsy to have critically low blood levels of both potassium and calcium, and she died of a cardiac arrhythmia. Rachel was previously in good health and had no history of any medical problems.

    After ruling out other potential causes, the medical team of child health specialists that investigated her death couldn't help but conclude in their published report, "Sudden Cardiac Death of an Adolescent During Dieting," that the Atkins Diet was the most likely cause of her death.

    The chief executive of the Atkins Corporation denied there was a link between the diet and Rachel's death, but implied she should have consulted her doctor before starting the diet.[406] In fact, concern over just such an event led the Director of the Nutrition Department at the esteemed Cleveland Clinic to declare that for people on the Atkins Diet, "Careful monitoring of electrolytes is absolutely essential..." Those who aren't professionally monitored on this kind of diet "are at the greatest risk for dangerous complications."[407]

    Dr. Paul Robinson, the Director of Adolescent Medicine at the University of Missouri, who was involved in the investigation of Rachel's death, is afraid that "we're having lots of near misses that we don't know about."[408] "You wonder," he said, "whether there are other people dying and we don't know about it."[409]

    "Is the diet safe for teenagers?" Dr. Atkins was asked in an interview. Dr. Atkins replied "The [Atkins] diet is safe for every overweight human being from the age of 18 months..."[512] Guided by this doctrine, the Atkins Corporation is trying to make inroads into schools. "I frankly think it's scandalous," said the Director of the Yale Prevention Research Center, "really very dangerous."[1155]

    One would think a teenager collapsing and dying after just 9 days on the diet might have ruined people's appetite for Atkins, but her death was hardly reported in the American press. When her parents held a press conference to tell their story for the first time and warn others that Atkins "killed our little girl,"[410] it was reported in London, Scotland, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. But out of the 34 reports that made it into the papers around the world about this Missouri teen, only 3 appeared in the U.S.[411] Despite repeated warnings from the American Heart Association, enthusiasm for the Atkins Diet did not seem to wane.

    While tending her daughter's immaculately-kept grave, Rachel's mom told a reporter her thoughts on the diet: "I want people to know you can actually die doing something as stupid as this."[412]

    I can't even be bothered to point out the obvious fallacies of this poorly written hack job. Apparently this Rachel person, if she does exist, learned about the "diet" on television and ordered some video tapes off of the infomercial. I have no idea if she was even doing the ATKINS DIET.

    however, i do wish to know if anyone who has properly done the Atkins Diet (or improperly, i want to hear about your experiences anyway!). Have you ever experienced anything peculiar with your heart beat? And any strange symptoms that you've otherwise never experienced?

    however, i do wish to know if anyone who has properly done the Atkins Diet (or improperly, i want to hear about your experiences anyway!). Have you ever experienced anything peculiar with your heart beat? And any strange symptoms that you've otherwise never experienced?
    I have been on the Atkins diet for 6 months so far and is working wonderfully for me. However, around the 6th week I started having bad episodes of arrhythmia, specifically atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia (AVNRT). I saw my doctor about this as it was preventing me from doing simple things such as sleeping. It would get so bad I couldn't handle it. A full blood panel and EKG were done and it came back that my calcium and potassium levels were DANGEROUSLY low and my doctor concluded that is what was causing it. I was instructed to ease off the diet for two weeks and take 99mg of potassium 3x a day, in addition with a good multi-vitamin and chelated multi-mineral supplement that included a lot of calcium. After a week the arrhythmia all but disappeared and in 2 1/2 weeks they were completely gone. I have had no issues since then and I couldn't feel better. My doctor said he firmly believes that the Atkins diet is the safest and healthiest way to go IF AND ONLY IF you take the proper precautions and take more than an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals.       What exactly weren't you eating that your potassium and calcium levels got so low?

      And ... why are you still on Induction?

        I have Atrial Fiberllation, Inappropriate Sinus Tach, Atrial Tach and SVT. So I have multiple arrhythmias. I had an ablation attempt a couple of months ago that went bad. I have too many bad areas to ablate and I went into AFIB on the table with a heartrate of 600. I had to be electrically converted with a defib 4xs to get back into rhythm.

        I am on quite a few heart meds including Sotalol. With all that went on I lost a bunch of energy and my lifestyle became lazy and I gained some weight. When I discussed with my doctor about losing some weight he gave me the choice of South Beach or Atkins. As long as I eat what I am supposed too they say my levels will be fine. I take one multi vitimen and eat what I am supposed to and my rates have been fine. My normal rate now on medication is 60-65 even during exercise.

          when she died she had been on the diet according to the post mortem 1-2 weeks. 3 yrs later it is suddenly 7 weeks.

          Also the doctor in the last sentence of his dramatic article on low carb high protein diets causing death says
          " while it is possible that the patients dietary regimen had nothing to do with her sudden cardiovascular collaspe, continued surveillance for similar cases is suggested" Southern Medical Journal 2002;95:1047-1049
          and as an immediate follow up a Memphis doc in the SMJ suggests lessions on the brain stem as the cause of death when sudden cardiac issues delevope

            Arrhythmias are an interesting thing. Most everyone will experience some type of arrhythmia in their life time. I have learned a lot about them in the past year.

            Most arrythmias are not life threatening. It all depends in which part of the heart the arrythmia stems from. It also has to do with the speed of the arrythmia and how long it takes your heart to convert back to normal sinus.

            Out of all the types I have only 2 are concerning. The Afib and the Inappropriate sinus and that one is actually rare in people. With Afib the risk is that if not converted back to normal sinus I can form blood clots in my heart that could travel to my brain and cause a stroke. They usually don't even become concerned until the rate reaches high 200s-300s. I know people who have been in Afib for days and all the sudden convert right back.

            Diet can play a big part of arrythmias. Too much caffeine, sugar, chocolate to name a few things can cause a high rate. Beeing on Atkins actually takes those things away. How can that be bad?

            I see a cardiologist and an electrophysiologist (someone who specializes in arrythmias). If you are concerned about your heart rate you can request they give you a Holter monitor or an event monitor. They can actually tell from those things where your palpatations are coming from and whether they are dangerous. It is all very interesting.
