  • a rise in my b/p

so here i am at goal.
here i am with high b/p.

i check this, and have since my weight loss journey, at the local walmart. the pharmacist asures me the machines are calibrated and check on a regular basis.
i was getting use to the numbers running about 119/65 or in the area.

the last couple of weeks has seen this rise. my reading the other night was 141/78. i know there are factors like did i just eat, how fast and far did i walk to get in the store, time of day and so on. i have stress and lots of it. i know why it is high and it has to be fixed because i am getting headaches again, i am not sleeping,

my question would be this for the know it all's around here: if and when this has happened to you, have you taken any kind of herbal treatments? if so, what?
what has worked for you? i do not plan on going on any kind of medication. i didn't do that when i was heavy and i sure ain't doing it now.

the treatment for your high blood pressure is going to depend on the cuase of this increase. new studies have shown that diuretics (natural foods or medication) are the number one effective treatment and should be used even if another med is also needed.

so are you getting enough potassium? Low potassium means your BP goes back up. Check your fitday and see in the reports section if your potassium is normal.

how is your sodium intake? check the fitday and see if you got an increase?

Exercise changes??? exercise lowers blood pressure.
Stress released hormones will increase blood pressure too so see if you can find a way to turn all that stress evoking stuff over to God and let him have it. That should lower your BP

Re: a rise in my b/p

thanks sandi. i chatted with the pharmacist about the machine. he checks his there every couple of days and says it is pretty much right on with the "official" way of doing things. he felt confident so i guess that made me feel the machine was okay to go by. mt t, who many have heard me speak about, is a retired navy nurse. he has the equipment and i think i will pop over to his house and have him check things out with his stuff. we'll see how much difference there is between the two.

thanks 2ibg, i knew you would come arunnin'!
so are you getting enough potassium?
i don't know if i am low on potassium or not. if doing fitday is the only way to find that out then i'll have to keep guessing. i hate fitday! i really do hate it. please don't make me go there!

        how is your sodium intake?
i think this is fine. i really don't salt my food and my weight has not flucuated like it would by retaining water. i've retained before and i don't have that feeling. i don't eat alot of canned goods. the veggies i get are fresh or frozen. and i buy the cheap stuff without any of the frills so i imagine there is next to no salt in those.

        Exercise changes??
now you know from my posts in our accountability thread that i have been doing pretty good with that. slug free and much more better than before. that is a plus i have working in my favor.

Stress released hormones will increase blood pressure too so see if you can find a way to turn all that stress evoking stuff over to God and let him have it.
this is exactly what i think is going on. too much stress. combine that with the aging woman mess that we all must face and my system is on overload. i know what you say is true and correct: i must give it over and 2big, i have tried but the phrase "easier said than done" comes to mind. i am a person who likes her ducks quacking on cue and lately, that is not the case. i try to do some of the breathing that i half way learned on the yoga/pilates dvd i have. when i am working at packing and such, and i start feeling overloaded, i quit and sit. hey! i like that! quit and sit.

i stopped by the store again on the way home today from church and i got a reading today of 136/78. some improvement over the other day. i try to analyze things so i did with this too and i know that the last 24 hours has not been like it was one week ago or even 4 days ago. what seemed to be overwhelming then, is under control now.

i will check what i can on potassium. thanks for the input!

With such a dramatic rise in such a short time I would go and get it checked elsewhere just to make sure it is not the machine.

I'm glad it's going back down at least some. Stress, gotta love it or it gets to you! I hope you're feeling better. We need you around here! You do so much for so many people, please take time to rest, take a bubble bath (you have to bath anyways) and drink some tea, light some candles and just close your eyes and float away to some place nice and quiet and relaxing for an hour. Read the bible, read a good book, just take time for YOU every day.

i do have the tub though!

Odille, i think i will do that. as i said, mr. t has this equipment and i'll have him do a check. you have to know though, the stress i am under did come on in a whirlwind. my b/p followed suit.

i will get it checked again by something other than that machine. it would be interesting to check them within hours of each other and see what difference there is. i'll keep you all posted. thanks for the comments!

Re: a rise in my b/p

Jimmie your doc can tell in your normal blood work what your potassium levels are. check the fruits and veggies you are eating on any nutritional site and you can get an estimate of how much potassium you are getting. remember you need more then minimum cause Atkins is a diuretic plan. before you move you might want to vist your doc who knows you and you can be relaxed around to get this checked cause you know going to see a new doc will have you all tensed up and BP will be much higher then normal on that viist.

                      thanks 2big.
i'll check out a site today if i have some time. i have to do a few errands and one of them takes me to walmart so another check today to see if indeed i am any lower.
i look for potassium on the shelf there the other night and by doggie, i didn't see any! 1001 kinds of vitamins and minerals and hormonal things and supplements and not one potassium bottle! it does come in pill form doensn't it? the pharmacist said he also takes magnesium. i do take vitamins so i guess i should check and see what kind of percentages i am getting. a re-evaluation of sorts.

oh when i go get it checked today i think i will sit at the little bench for a few minutes before taking it. i usually just sit, test, and go. the packing is coming right along and i expect things to start getting better health wise right soon.

                      to do for today:
check websites for veggies and potassium levels
check b/p at walmart and with mr. t, if possible

Re: a rise in my b/p

Why not purchase a BP machine from the drug store. I have one and check mine every day. I bring it with me to my doctors at every visit, along with my BP log. My BP is always higher at the docs due to "white coat syndrome", but we always check my own machine with his to be sure they are calibrated and giving similar readings.

They usually are battery operated. If you can't afford one (they aren't too expensive) ask your doc to see if one of his drug reps has one...sometimes reps get them to give out to their docs.

Also, I heard a cardiologist say by all means, BP should be taken when the person is in a quiet mode. My own BP cuff says relax for at least 10 minutes before taking the reading. The true readings of BP are meant to be in a relaxed state, and should be taken a few times a day if possible. No taking right after exercise or housework, or errand running...that will skew it.

I almost got on meds myself, until Atkins and a 40 pound weight loss. Now I'm my doc's poster child!

But please remember, sometimes BP goes up just because of who we are, our genetic makeup, etc. It is the silent killer, so if hypertension becomes a reality for you, do take it seriously and treat it. Sometimes diet and exercise aren't enough.

Parsley juice is a natural diuretic, so I've heard.

                        Good luck...

Did you all know you can get an elevated reading if you need to pee! It raises your BP. I always get mine done on Saturday at the chemist (drug store) in the mall. I finish the shopping, go to the loo, and sit on the seat outside the chemist for a few minutes. Then I check my pulse (my pedometer has a pulse meter), and if it looks OK I go and have my reading. No sense putting yourself behind the 8 ball right at the start.
Diuretic herbs include celery, juniper, parsley and dandelions (thier nickname here is 'wet the beds'!), but I'm not sure if it is the flower, seeds or roots.
