  • Total Cholesterol DOWN 53 points!

So, I finally got my blood work done. I couldn't really ask for any better. Except we want the HDL up.

My beginning tests were 12/09/2005 and the new was done 07/14/2006:

Total Cholesterol 172 to 119 (down 53 pts)
    Triglycerides 125 to 55 (down 70 pts)
HDL 35 to 29 (down 6 pts and way low, but not as bad as it sounds.)
    LDL 112 to 79 (down 33 pts)
Cholesterol /HDLC ration from 4.9 to 4.1 (reference point is below 4.4 w00t!)
Blood Glucose 92 to 81 (down 11 pts)

The doctor wants me to try and raise HDL by taking the flax/fish oil Omega 3's (which I know I should be taking and I have a big old jar of them, but I just don't do it...going to start today). She also recommended me taking Red Rice Yeast...anyone know anything about that? I'll have to google it.

She asked me what I was doing, I said Atkins, she said Great,...Take fish oil and red rice yeast and come back in 6 months.

AWESOME!!!!!!!! What a great doctor, I love those natural remedies!

Yes, red rice yeast will help, along with your omega 3s (yes you definitely should be taking those!!) Flush-free niacin also helps. I get mine at Walmart and take 2 a day. Also, some good ol' fashioned cardiovascular exercise is an excellent way to raise your HDL (I should know, mine is 106!!!) GREAT JOB, GIRLFRIEND!!

Betty--I actually JOGGED yesterday. I can't believe it. Well, I needed a shove in the exercise direction, so maybe this will do it. Do you take the red rice yeast? I see the word rice and yeast and think OMG that's not Atkins friendly. My doctor is into homeopathic stuff...she's pretty cool. I also told her about my mood swings 10-14 days pre-TOM and she told me to go to the health food store and get progesterone cream and use it for those 10-14 days and see if it helps.

Phode--yeah, all Atkineers drink a gallon of bacon grease for breakfast and walk around with nervous ticks!! (that's what the personal trainer guy who did my body composition analysis actually said to me...I can't wait to go back, take him my lipid profile and a copy of DANDR).

WOOHOO, ANOTHER JOGGER CONVERT!!! AWESOME! (how soon do we meet on the Tampa Bay Trail???)

I don't take the red rice yeast, but the niacin has done wonders for my cholesterol! Oh and the garlic and fish oil are terrific too!!

Hope you get the relief from the progesterone cream .. I've heard great things about it!

Betty, I don't know about all that yet LOL But I was pretty proud that I did it at all!!!

One other thing that the Dr said about my HDL being so low...She really wasn't that worried about it because the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL is within normal range. Basically my LDL is so low that my HDL being low isn't as big a deal I guess.

2Big, yes, I read that there are a lot of knock offs of the red rice yeast. She recommended that I get it at a specific store. I haven't been over there to get it yet. I'm hoping that exercise, not smoking (I read that smoking lowers the HDL), and taking the omega 3's might be enough.

Re: Total Cholesterol DOWN 53 points!

VR, fantastic! I know this is a few months old, but I wanted to comment. First off, your thread here has pretty much answered the questions I was going to ask. I knew already that this way of eating was originally designed to lower cholesterol/blood pressure/heart disease. I know, but sometimes I just need to discuss things to get them into my head. I have two people I am concerned with. One is me and one is my sweety.

First me. My cholesterol is 120 as of 11/27/06, up from 99 and my doctor says that in my particular case she wants to see it down to 70. She wants me to take Zocor and gave me a prescription, but with everything going on in my life, I have not had time to look into the drug and read specifically what Dr. Atkins has to say about taking the meds. I have read it, but at the time it didn't concern me, so i forgot it. My HDL is 32, down from 43 last year. She also wants to see that up about 30 points. My triglycerides are low, not a concern.

My blood pressure has never in my entire life been over 120/70, so i am good there. Her biggest concern is this. I am "technically" diabetic. I have rarely been on medication because I could control it with diet very adequately even before Atkins, but since I had a couple of grandparents die from it, she watches it closely. I am still not on medication at this point and my sugars are pretty low. With all of the high stress I have had this semester, my blood sugars have raised some and she wants me back on meds. Also, I had a stress/nuclear scans (myocardial perfusion) test last week because I was having issues with rapid pounding heart beats that lasted for hours to the point that I couldn't breathe or do anything. The cardiologist said I didn't need that, that I should have worn a monitor for a month, but his suggestion was that it was just stress and would go away when I lower my stress. I was having PVC's (premature ventricular contractions) while I was having my EKG, for a few moments each time, but I told him that is exactly what I felt when it lasted for hours. He said they can last for hours.

I have also had a UGI and a barium swallow because I have had a lot of problems swallowing...it showed I had a hernia and reflux. I haven't had the symptoms of reflux, so I was told it is silent reflux.

Re: Total Cholesterol DOWN 53 points!

I was afraid I would time out, so I started new.
Anyway, for me the final word from my doc was to start Zocor, take the diabetic meds and start stress management councelling, which I had already planned to do. I am positive I do not want to start the diabetic meds again and I don't have enough info to decide on the Zocor. Anyone have any knowledge to pass along?

Second, my sweetie. He just confessed to me that he has had high blood pressure for a few years now and still wouldn't tell me how high, but he said pretty high. He has been hiding this from me. Now he has been told to start on Vitorin for hign cholesterol. I want to convert him to Atkins. I am not sure how he will feel about it. We haven't discussed it yet. He is pretty much in denial when it comes to his health. He sees it as proof he is getting old and clams up. At this point we do not live together and as long as I am in school, we may not, so I am not cooking for him. He cooks, simply, but not junk. He is a good eater. He has never eaten fast food and love healthy foods, but eats way too many carbs. He and his doctor agree that his major issues are smoking and stress. he gets easily stressed over money, even though he makes enough, money is always on his mind. Probably because he has 2 children. I think because he is thinking that he is aging and cannot continue his business forever and has no idea what he is going to do. He has always been self-employed and I don't think (though I could be wrong) that he has a large retirement waiting for him, because he always says he will have to work until he dies. He needs stress management more than I do. I am now concerned for him, but thankful he opened up about this. We have been dating for over 5 yrs and he is just now telling me this. Such a man.... Oh, he is very worried about taking this cholesterol lowering medicine and doesn't want to. Should he?

I certainly don't have the medical answers you need Pamela. But I will give you this advice....read the diabetic forums and the blood pressure/cholesterol forums. There is a lot of info there. Find a doctor who is supportive of your Atkins, it certainly helps. It will take a few months for this WOE to really make a significant impact on your lipid profile...so keep that in mind. If your medical conditions warrant using drugs right away, by all means do so, but stay in close contact with your doctor so the dosages can be modified quickly as your body needs it.

Oh, and as for raising HDL--exercise, walnuts, green/black/oolong teas are what I've been told, and fish/flax oil supplements.
