I have high blood pressure. Seems to go hand in hand with being overweight. It runs in my family somewhat. Not extensively. I am hardheaded and won't take the medicine because of what I have read in alternative medical literature and the sides from every one I tried were unbearable. I had a severe heart arrythmia while on 25mg of HCTZ.
Mine is only slightly elevated. The systolic is in the 150-160 range and the diastoic is in the 80-90 range. Hopefully Atkins and cardio can get it back to normal. I was vegan for 8 months and lost weight and it went back to normal. The vegan diet, while effective, was far from desirable for me. I always been an eggs and bacon guy, not a buckwheat pancakes guy, so I know I can do Atkins.
Once you get out of your own way, you see, true victory is victory over one's self.
Well, I just joined the ranks of HBP and it has been bad. My highest has been 190/96, not good and scared the **** out of my doc. I can't afford to wait for Atkins to do its thing because my doc says at this stage, I could have a stroke at any time. So I have to take meds whether I like it or not but am hoping that the next month or two, if I work really hard at it, I can get off them by losing some more weight and getting serious about Atkins again. God willing.
BORNTOWIN: I had the same thoughts but I feel better meds than dead. You really should consider taking something until you can at least get it down a little. Ask your doc about taking Atenol (what I use). The only side effects are a little dizzyness once in a while and you get a little tired but that is only when you first start taking it. It is also cheap, about $15 a perscrip. of 90 pills. It also doesn't clash with low carb; I haven't had any different type cravings or problems since taking it. I am not into meds of any kind and prefer not to take even a aspirin but HBP is not to play around with, especially for me being female and statistics showing that I would likely die from a first heart attack. If not, you need to work like a demon to get that down without meds---great motivation not to cheat! lol!

Ok I feel the need to report back since I started this thread pissed that my bp and cholesterol had not gone down...well I have no idea wbout my cholesterol and am not going to the doctor just for that I will wait until I HAVE to go for some other reason...and I hope that will be a long long time ..(I work there why would I want to be there during my time off?)...anyway I have not checked my bp since it was 140/90 over a month ago and I knew my time off medication was limited ...well guess what ...for some reason it has gone down!!!! whoooo hooooo!!!! it has been 118/72 for a week and I am considering that stable enough for me not to worry about. I do attribute it to my weight loss btw and to the fact I did this whole WOE pretty close to perfectly ..with room for human error! and I am very human!
I drank all the water ..and still do. I do not buy processed food and cook everything from scratch, so the sodium I consume is evident not hidden ..and I do salt my food but only as a garnish...I get minimal to none.. work out type exercise...however I do work on my house and in my yard doing a LOT of physical labor...and I always park far from anything so I can walk ..use stairs not elevators....it did work after all it just took time.....I will recheck again in a month unlike my weight I refuse to obsess on this one!...hope this helps
High BP runs in my family - not matter how much the individual weighs. When I was skinny and exercising even more than I am now, I was first diagnosed with high BP. I was in my 30s. According to the cardiologist I saw recently for pre-op tests, my high BP is hereditary (being diagnosed at a young age is a key factor in determining that). So I'm stuck on meds the rest of my life!
On modified low-carb plan
164.5/159.5/130
Walking 20-30 minutes/day, 5 days/week
Not now. Look at the figures in my signature. Another medical due, but I don't suppose it's got worse.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Male 6 ft 3in 60 years old. Married 28 years.
Began Atkins March 04 at 260lb, reduced to 203lb by April 07 and maintained.
Blood Pressure Mar 04 147/94 . Jun 04 121/74 . Dec 04 119/72 . Jan 06 126/71 . Dec 07 110/70
Atkins makes exercise mandatory - I took up cycling - see last pics at 203lb.
Is there a possibility that my bp meds (hydrochlorothiazide) is effecting my weight loss? Doing induction now for 1 1/2 weeks and don't feel any change at all. This is my 2nd time doing Atkins & I clearly remember feeling something right away.
i have white coat hyper tension
when ever I am in a drs office its always high,
But if they take it when they are about to leave and the visit thing is done, its 110/70
but they say its still considered to by high cause it does that

And of course as you guys already mentioned the actual losing of the weight means the blood doesn't have to go through so many extra miles of blood vessels. did you know if you are 25 lbs overweight, you have nearly 5,000 extra miles of blood vessels through which your heart must pump blood. :yikes
That is amazing! I've never heard of that before either. 2Big you are just a wealth of information!!!
Since it was Heidi who started this thread, was wondering if we could get an update on your bloodpressure (although with your party looming in the near future might not be a good time to ask, lol). Anyhow, did you ever have to go on meds or did it come down naturally.
you probably don't want to hear this, but, I went to the doctor for the first time in about 17 years the other week. My BP is 116/84 if I recall correctly. I was amazed. I should've had more beers and Marlboros.
