  • How do you raise good cholesterol

    My mom doesn't do atkins but I figured this was the best place to ask,
    How do you raise good cholesterol without increasing the bad too? Her bad cholesterol (LDL--I think) is okay but she needs to raise her good cholesterol. Any suggested foods to eat???

    well you can eat foods with the good stuf HDL but most foods containing HDL also have LDL like meats
    exercise raises HDL
    Onmega 3 rich foods like Flax seedmeal rasie HDL
    onions raise HDL
    monosaturated foods like Olive oil and Canola raise HDL
    Dark green leafy veggies raise HDL
    reduce total alcholhol however wine in moderation can raise HDL

    Avoid transfats
    Avoid refined high carbohydrate foods

      You're preaching to the choir. She's one of those people who is convinced that she can't give up Dr. Pepper. She also lives alone and doesn't like cooking big meals. But my habits have rubbed off on her a little. She was the only patient of her doctor's that lost weight over the holidays (3 lbs). I guess that's pretty good for someone who isn't on a diet and didn't consciously change her eating habits. Anyhow, exercise is a real source of frustration with the two of us. She has asthma and is convinced she can't exercise. I'm going to give her my WATP tape since I don't use it anymore. I don't think she has to be thin or anything, but losing 25-30 pounds would help her health tremendously.

      Thanks for the tips. She has one of my copies of DANDR and I've introduced her to ADBB so maybe eventually I can get her to join me on this. In fact, I'm about to make a phone call.....

        We're going to the store tonight and cleaning out the cabinets. She's not doing no caffeine (she will later--she just doesn't know it yet). So I told her we would buy some diet drinks for emergency use. I'm only going to do induction for 2 weeks this time (I've been slacking myself and could use a CLEAN induction). I'm going to show her all the good websites (ADBB, Fitday, etc.) and we will make up a menu for the week. I've agreed to come over for dinner at least twice during the week. And I'm going to hide her scale. I've about decided that I can't weigh more than once every two weeks without losing my sanity.
