No, I don't think it does. If you were fasting for surgery, then yes, they include water in that. But for a blood test I'm pretty sure you can have water.

Good to know about the water. When I had mine checked I just fasted for food, not water. Phew! Keep us posted Jimmie!

            Re: cholesterol check

Any advise i welcome it. I have been doing my atkins for 10 weeks. I have been struggling. Mostly with cheescake and popcorn. But that is going. Been cheat free for 3 days. Just went to the doctor for my Cholesterol check.

As you can see no more pork skins and rinds for me, no pork at all. Egg beaters only no eggs and no pork or red meat. I have to get this cholesterol down. Pray for me.

            Bad news

My total cholesterol went up from 216 to 250

Bad LDL up from 130 to 180

Good ldl down from 39 to 31

My doctor said that I am doing everything right so he doesn’t know why they went up … but no meat now except fish and chicken, no eggs except egg beaters and no pork or beef what so ever.

            Good news

            I have lost 25 pounds

My Triglycerides went down from 231 – 160 – I am not in the diabetic warning zone anymore

Doctor is still willing to help me with out taking the medicine … but if they don’t come down in 4 months … I am sure he is pretty much going to make me take it.

i certainly am not the queen mother of info when it comes to cholesterol, D .

i am determined not to take meds even if my numbers come back as not being stellar. i have heard and read things and also have a good friend , that had very good success with red yeast rice. it might be something you want to look into for your own information and i think i'd be asking your doctor about it.

did you fast before the check? 9 to 12 is the range but the pharmacist told me 12.
no coffee, no tea, no food. only water.

                Re: cholesterol check

Yes, I stopped eating at 9:30 and my cholestoral was checked about 11:00 am.

Red yeast rice is that high in carbs ... I was going to do induction till I get under 200 pounds and then add oatmeal back into my diet ... that really helped get it down. I am now doing 45 min a day on the treadmill which should really help bring it down and the good up.

Do you think the oatmeal would hurt me bad in the carb area?

                    Re: cholesterol check

Interesting link about the red yeast rice jimmie. A new one on me.

Daione... you say you've only been doing Atkins for ten weeks. It could easily be that you need to wait a little longer before seeing results in the Cholesterol area. Your numbers will go up before they go down. That's normal with Atkins.
It's also important to stick to plan as much as you can. If you have too many battles with the cheesecake and popcorn, your numbers won't improve so much.
Your trigs are improved, so that's a good first sign. Get re-tested in a few weeks and you might well be pleasantly surprised.

                        Re: cholesterol check

Hey all - just a note from a former phlebotomist and what I used to tell my patients:

For basically any sort of blood test, drink as much water as you can stand beforehand, particularly if you are a "tough stick". Your blood is mostly water, and if you are the least bit dehydrated, it can make your veins harder to find. The only real exceptions to this rule are surgery (they are worried about water in your system coming out from either end when you are sedated) or colonoscopy (the salts in that foul drink are at a certain proportion that they don't want diluted). Otherwise, Drink drink drink!

Red yeast rice breaks down to a natural statin in the system and is used as a cholesterol controller. Ask your doctor about it first, especially if you are taking any other sorts of statins already.

                            Re: cholesterol check

I recently got my blood results back (taken at OB/GYN) and the doctor wants me to see an intern about my results. They are pretty similar to Jimmie's (hers are tad bit better)
putting hers down and mine next to it in bold.

TOTAL CHOLESTEROL IS HIGH but hang on 253
                            254

LDL is a bit high but hang on
                            162 164

HDL (should be 40 or more)
                            77 69

TRIGLYCERIDES (should be less than 150)
                            75 99

                            BLOOD SUGAR (normal is <100)
                            90
my ratio is 3.3 % which is pretty darn good. 3.7

I am so afraid they are going to tell me to step away from Atkins. Looking at what I have here do you think I am doing okay. What can I do to lower that LDL?

My blood glucose was 116 that day but I had eaten a sugarfree mint which the doctor said shouldn't have interfered. Sunday morning before eating I had my mom check my glucose with her diabetes kit and it was 67 so I am assuming I am okay in that area.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

                              Hi Jimmie
I've been taking Red Yeast Rice faithfully for 3 months now. Along with it I take the Co-Q10. CO-Q10 gets depleted from our bodies when taking a statin. Always best to replenish our bodies with it. Although Red Yeast Rice is a natural, the active ingredient in it is the same as Mevecore, a statin.
I will be getting my lab done next tuesday. It will be interesting to see what the levels are. I had to stop the Lipitor that my doctor had me on because of a serious side effect. He doesn't know I stopped them and started taking the Red Yeast Rice. He is aware that I have the Knowlege of how to take Red Yeast Rice. Never take it along with another form of statin!
I will continue to strive for better numbers without taking prescriptions and control my numbers with diet and naturals alone!
