Pre-Atkins
Total Cholesterol 192
HDL 34
LDL 113
Triglycerides 227
for an total/HDL ration of 5.6 (low risk is <4.5)
After 6 mo. of Atkins with 32lb weight loss
Total Cholesterol 149
HDL 40
LDL 89
Triglycerides 100
for an total/HDL ration of 3.7 (low risk is <4.5)
Overall a pretty substantial improvement. Total cholesterol went from borderline to pretty low. More importantly, all of the reduction in total cholesterol was a reduction in LDL ("bad") cholesterol. In fact, my HDL went up to 40, taking me out of the "high risk" category for total HDL and into a borderline category (>59 is considered low risk....remember for HDL the higher the better). My total/HDL ratio, which is the best predictor of future heart disease also improved significantly, crossing into the "low risk" category.
Not bad for someone who eats eggs for breakfast every single day
. Although I should point out that I also started exercising and increased the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in my diet (I eat a couple of land o lakes "Omega 3 eggs" for breakfast every day).
My total weight lost is about 32lbs, going from 205 to 173, which I consider a healthy weight for myself (5'6'' male).
