  • High Cholesterol - the BAD kind!

    Hello my Atkins' community!

I have been an on and off atkineer for about 2 years. I've lost a total of 60lbs and just been on a yo-yo about it. I want to dedicate myself once and for all!

Now that I got the intro out of the way here is the deal:

I have been off Atkins now for about 3 weeks. 4 days ago I had blood work done and today they called me in to explain my results. Apparently I have high cholestrol and its the bad kind. She explained its from red meats, fried foods, and sodium. I can understand all that but I don't overconsume too much of it either.

My question is, could this whole diagnosis of high cholesterol be from my RECENT diet chage in eating non Atkins and being very bad or is part of it from eating the Atkins way??

I'm afraid to go back on Atkins thinking its going to make it worst!! I honestly don't know what to do and I see so many good results from people here with that kind of situation but I wonder if their cholesterol was REALLY BAD and by doing this it got better. But in my case I never had problems and it seems like a recent thing, as if Atkins might be the cause of it or a part of it.

What should I do - I know you guys aren't doctors and can't give me medical advice but if you were in my place would you try another kind of eating regime?

Sorry if this was long - I know lots of you probably wonder the same thing. I tell people I'm on Atkins and they are always giving me the red flag about it and I just want to be at peace with knowing I'm not doing wrong. I hope someone can relate or help me clear things up.

I am suppose to go back for blood work in three months and if things are still bad and I have been doing nothing but atkins, I'm going to have to stop and they want to put me on Lipitor. I really don't want to take pills!! I hope someone could help - I'm soooo sorry this was soooo long

Me personally? I would do a very strict Atkins and get my results down the road and see.

Read page 176. When you go into fat burning ketosis, your triglycerides should drop, as you will be burning stored fat for energy, which is made up of triglycerides. My total cholesterol has gone from 190 to 162 and my ratio is quite favorable. What was your ratio? that is actually more important than any one total.

Also, a wonderful way to get rid of bad cholesterol is to increase your 'good' HDL cholesterol with exercise. It acts like a 'broom' to sweep the bad stuff to your liver to be metabolized before it can form plaque in arteries.

Plus it makes you feel great!

I agree with momto - give it three months of Atkins. You have to eat during those three months after all, (!) so my feeling is you may as well be following a proven, tried and tested healthy regime. Stick on plan - do it by the book, and see how it goes.

I'm confused about what your cholesterol levels were before you went off Atkins for three weeks. You've been an Atkineer for two years, so I'm wondering whether you ever had your levels checked back then?

I tend to agree that you need to give it some time since your three week break. Exercise is great for helping cholesterol results improve.
