Re: Quitting Smoking - Atkins & Chantix

Today is my 10th day on Chantix and I really feel like it is going to work, I was a 2 pack a day smoker and I am down to 10 or 15 cigarettes a day hoping to be smoke free within the next week. I feel like this Chantix is a MIRACLE drug......nothing could be easier unless I could just wiggle my nose and be done.

I agree! I wish it weren't so expensive though - I think more people would try it then. Of course, think of all the money we are saved on cigarettes once you are quit, right? Keep up the great work!!

Re: Quitting Smoking - Atkins & Chantix

              Hi all,
Well, I'll be on this bandwagon with all of you on MONDAY JANUARY 28TH. I visited the Doctor this week and was able to get my prescription for Champix. I've tried Zyban and to be honest, it didn't offer enough strength of anything to make me want to quit or cut back.......( i know it's up to me as well and will power to want to give them up).

So as of Monday, I have high hopes for Champix!

I hope it's going well Peachy! The Zyban is really just Wellbutrin repackaged, so it just calms your nerves while quitting. the Chantix works completely differently and from everyone I know that's on in or has been on it has had great success! Same to you!

Hey Peachy - just wondering how you are making out so far on the Chantix. I didn't notice any difference in me until I'd been on it several days. Hope you are doing well!

Re: Quitting Smoking - Atkins & Chantix

                    Hi there,

Sorry! It's been weeks since I've been on the forum ( became ill , then had braces, then couldn't chew because of extremely painful teeth!). So needless to say I had to put atkins aside and only eat soup and today was my first real meal. The good news is, NO CHEATING in the sense I didn't ANYTHING bad, nor any sweats. I only ate soup and my worst problem was the salt in the soup and perhaps being over carbs and some days no food at all!.

Anyways, because of this I didn't start my champix. I have my prescription sitting right here and i have a zyban prescription too. I have heard some nightmare stories about Champix and I'm scared and need to do some research. Just the other day, there was a commercial (lawyer) saying " if your loved committed suicide after taking champix, we are here to help your family" OMG!!! That was enough to scare me. I've heard that if you suffer from depression, not to take it. I suffer mild occasional depression, and then really bad PMS depression each month. I'm not sure what to do.

My Doctor said these stories or accusations have NOT been proven to be caused by the Champix. Quitting smoking can indeed cause an individual to experience depression as a symptom of quitting. The drug itself does NOT cause a person to become depressed.

What do you think?Experienced people??? Did you "feel" any different.

I've taken Zyban before without ANY problems. I have always just continued smoking with it, even if I didn't feel like , I just did out of habit.

What do you think?? What's your experience.

Re: Quitting Smoking - Atkins & Chantix

Oh my gosh Peachy- what a trial you've been through!! I'm glad you are feeling better now.

I think you should listen to your doctor since he knows your situation the closest. For me, I had no funky feelings or dreams or anything at all like that when I was taking the Chantix. The only side effect I had was a little sour & crampy stomach if I took them on an empty stomach. And even that wasn't too bad - it just made me "hungry".

A friend at work has a prescription too, but now she's scared to fill it because of the scary stories out there. I haven't seen or heard any of the stories or commercials, and I feel terrible for anyone that really has had troubles like that, but I am suspicious of the claims that it was due to the medication. But I only have my own experience to judge by - and I'm no scientist!

Re: Quitting Smoking - Atkins & Chantix

That commercial was the first I had heard of a potential side effect of that nature also. My personal experience did not include any depression-like symptoms. I had the normal stomach pains, but that was remediated with taking food immediately after taking the pill.

As Wendy stated, talk to your doctor and see how he feels about it. Best of luck!

I started taking Chantix a couple of weeks ago and I haven't smoked in 6 days. I smoked for 27 years and was up to 1.5 packs a day. I agree with an earlier poster, it's as if my mind erased the memory of smoking and I'm quite calm. The only problem? I've put on a few pounds already, but that's not the fault of Chantix, that's my own fault.

Re: Quitting Smoking - Atkins & Chantix

I quit March 2 (with a few slip ups.) I'm using the lozenges though as my doctor wont prescribe me Chantix due to my past history with depression. I was really surprised that she wouldn't give it to me, because it worked so well for my brother & sister-in-law.

I am using nicotine lozenges, which reading this thread kind of scared me because another user took Chantix to get off those. I'm down to 3 or 4 lozenges a day compared to when I first started I followed the directions and had between 7-9.

Great job to those of you that have fully quit & good luck to those of us trying!
