    Within 20 minutes:
Blood pressure, body temperature and pulse rate will drop to normal.

    Within eight hours:
    Smoker's breath disappears.
Carbon monoxide level in blood drops, and oxygen level rises to normal.

    Within 24 hours:
    Chance of heart attack decreases.

    Within 48 hours:
    Nerve endings start to regroup.
Ability to taste and smell improves.

    Within three days:
    Breathing is easier.

    Within two to three months:
    Circulation improves.
    Walking becomes easier.
Lung capacity increases up to 30 percent.

    Within one to nine months:
Sinus congestion and shortness of breath decrease.
Cilia that sweep debris from your lungs grow back.
    Energy increases.

    Within one year:
Excess risk of coronary heart disease is half
that of a person who smokes.

    Within two years:
Heart attack risk drops to near normal.

    Within five years:
Lung cancer death rate for an average former
pack-a-day smoker decrease by almost half.
    Stroke risk is reduced.
Risk of mouth, throat and esophageal cancer is half that of a smoker.

    Within 10 years:
Lung cancer death rate is similar to that of a
    person who does not smoke.
    The pre-cancerous cells are replaced.

    Within 15 years:
Risk of coronary heart disease is the same
as a person who has never smoked.

Re: What happens when you quit smoking?

It is just over 14 years for me. I often think of the damage I have done to myself. I am in the medical field and see the damage that smoking causes. What gets me is when I see the nurses taking their smoke breaks outside the hospital. I am just thankful that I quit and everyone in my family quit. My mother has severe emphysema from it and she also has had a coronary stent placed this year. She quit 10 years ago. I told her if she didn't quit she would have been dead by now the lung disease would have been that bad. She is only 64 years old. Congrats to all who have quit, and for those who haven't, try to get over your addiction. It is hard, but you can do it..........Dawn

Re: What happens when you quit smoking?

I'm going to quit after I finish the last three cigarettes in this pack. I tried quitting a few days ago but after a day my blood pressure dropped to a scary 75/50 (I have low blood pressure issues). One cigarette later it was back up to 90/58 and two cigarettes later it was 100/70, which is pretty normal for me. I talked to my doctor yesterday and he suggested a new medication plus waiting out that "bad day" to see if my blood pressure didn't correct itself without the cigarettes to bolster it. *crosses fingers*

I smoked from the time I was 16 until I was 25, then quit cold turkey and never looked back. After a very difficult separation from my husband and the low blood pressure issues, I started smoking again in January of 2006 both as a stress-relief mechanism and in hopes that it would raise my blood pressure enough for me to stop taking all the drugs I take to regulate it. Now I'm coughing all the time, taking raspy breaths, and my nose is constantly plugged up, and I've decided that it's not worth it. I'd rather take the meds than be constantly feeling like crud. So this year I'm making two changes for the better - getting back on the Atkins WOL and quitting smoking.

Thanks for taht list - I'm going to print it and hang it by my computer monitor for next time I want a cigarette; hopefully it will help remind me of all the reasons to endure the difficulty I know I'm in for.

Re: What happens when you quit smoking?

I also read somewhere the other day that for women, you should quit smoking during your TOM or in the two weeks after. NEVER during the two weeks BEFORE because thats when you are irritable from Pre-Menstural stuff.

I quit June 9th, 2005. AND I AM CURED. When you quit smoking it's all about your attitude.
