  • Day One... because there's always a first day. Join in!

    The first day. Day One.

It's always a first step towards recovery from any addiction.

This is my Day One. I'm going without caffeine for the first time ever today! I sent all the coffees and teas to work with my husband for the break room, and Diet Coke has been replaced with oregano water.

Still, it's always a Day One for someone somewhere.

I used to post at a board with phenomenal people, and they always had a "Day One" thread. 5 years ago they started me on my way to self awareness of the problems of others. Yes, while mine were weight issues, I watched others struggle with chemical addiction of many kinds. We were all in the same boat, plodding along, regardless of our own personal issues.

Many times, people joined in with their own "Day One" stories. Me, I waited 3 years before admitting I really needed to take it One Day at a time.

So here is our very own Day One thread for ADBB, in honor of ready betty, nancy, tusker, dyed grey, friends and yours truly, happymeal harriet, nee cleochatra.

    Shields Up, everyone!

    It's a new Day!

    It's Day One.

    Hi Cleo,

Kudos for giving up caffeine! I know it's not easy you're talking to a two pot of coffee oceans of diet coke a day drinker. I think that's why my first few days of induction were so hard and I felt so miserable.

It's funny look back at two months ago and every morning began with a pot of coffee brewing (Sean would have one cup I drank the rest and through another pot on) and diet cokes all day, all night add to that three packs of cigarettes. It's amazing I'm still here.

Atkins is amazing, you know just going to the supermarket would wear me out - literally. I would get home and it would take me an hour to recover before I could put anything away.

Now I'm doing the WATP 3 mile every morning and have been smoke free for three weeks - and all of it started with that "one day"

So great idea for a thread and I hope people will share their stories and why they chose to quit - for me it was simple I was dying, literally. For others it may be not quite so severe - but it doesn't matter as long as you start making changes for the better.

Once you do it's like tossing a stone into a river, those ripples spread out to aspects of your life you may never have imagined.

      Cleo,
Congrats on your decision to quit! How is day 2 going? I hope you don't have too bad of a headache. Tylenol can help it if you do.

if you were a can drinker you may need to get some canned water and refill them for that hand to mouth issues while you are dealingwith the headache, and withdrawals. I know that greatly help me quit my 24 can a day habit. Keep drinking the water and it will get better in a few days.

              Giving things up....

A few years ago I had got into the habit of not using sugar or any sweeteners in my tea or coffee over Lent but then returning to it after that period of time was over (and then digging into as much chocolate as I could!)

Then I thought - actually, doing without sugar in tea or coffee isn't that bad.... and for about three or four years now have not been using it. I still like a cup of coffee when I get into the office but I'm down to one cup of caffeine a day and then it's decaff or herbal teas along with lots of water.

Congrats to cleochatra too - you're a very inspiring person.

Hi Cleochatra! WOW! You gave up coffee. Very impressive. I couldn't even imagine. I'm a coffee "snob" and Starbucks is on the corner near my office. What prompted you to give up the Joe? Keep us posted as to how you feel without it!

Cleo was giving up Diet Soda more then the coffee or tea, I think. I tried giving up the coffe but to me it was not so much the caffine but the coffe its self. I am back to decaf or half caffine. I just love it too much :nod
