  • My Dear Friend Mt. Dew

I have cut out all types of soda out of my diet completely! Since Sunday I have drank nothing but water. I am such a pop addict, this has been a very painful transition.

I should have called this post My Dear Friend any kind of soda that is sweet and fizzy. I drank them all(with the exception of Cherry Coke). I work in a place that has free fountain soda for employees, then I would pick up 1 or 2 20z on the way home, drink one at night and one in the morning. If I only picked one up after work at 2am, there were many mornings that I would have to run to the store and buy a couple of 20 oz for the few hours before I went to work. Often, I would buy a couple of 2 liters for the house and drink a full 2 liter in one day.

So, needless to say, I am having huge withdrawls! I have had headaches and queezy stomache feelings for 4 days now. Instead of it being all day, it is now only in the evening when I am at work. But that makes my shift pretty difficult to get through. Tonight I immediately popped a couple excederine when I felt the headache coming on and that did help quite a bit, but by the end of my shift, I started feeling queezy again. I am drinking 60-70oz of water a day. I haven't drank anything else.

I know that this will get better, but I am wondering if, because I was such an addict and drank so much soda, if that is making my withdrawl symptoms more severe, or if it will take me longer than typical amount of time to get through them?

I see many people talking about the induction flu only lasting 48 hours. This has been 4 days already. I thought I was getting past it, but when I felt that headache come on tonight, I knew I am not there yet.

    Any thoughts?

I am not sure, and I since your doing such an awesome job at getting unhooked from the soda, I would suggest that you ask 2big as she had a case-a-day habit and kicked it. I'll send her this link if she is on.

        hey there
Glad you are attempting to kick your caffeine habit.
I was a 24 can a day Diet Coke drinker and I know MT DEW has more caffeine in it than DC so I'm sure your withdrawal adjustment will be worse then mine but it took till day 4 for the headache to stop and I almost quit Atkins on day 3. take any caffeine free OTC pain med you normally take for the headache.

try to push through the sluggish feeling as it will go away and you are going to be amazed on the day your headach is gone when you wake up at how quiet for lack of a better word the world feels to you. I was so energized you'd have thought I'd had a six pack in my sleep that day.

hang in there. Make sure you are eating atkins legal high fat moderate protein and low carb and get something other then excedrine as it has caffeine in it

How are you feeling now that its been over a week?

I went thru the same thing when I kicked coffee. All I drank for six weeks was water, but all I could think about was my morning coffee. When I hit Rung 2 (dairy) I tried to add a cup of decaf in the morning (because I like it with cream). It just wasn't the same. I've tried it a few times, but it's just O.K. I really can take it or leave it. Besides, it seemed to lower my water intake. Nothing taste as good as thin feels.

Stay with it and you'll be over it in no time too.

Raises hand, I am a former Mt. Dew addict. I have drank Mt. Dew for as long as I can remember. I used to carry 4 20oz bottles to work. I had one when I got up in the morning and 2-3 when I got home from work. I always had soda in the house.

I gave it up a month ago. It was tough at first but now I don't miss it. The other night I was out and it was time to take my medicine and I had ran out of water so I took a drink of my sons Mt. Dew. It doesn't even taste good right now. It had a completely different taste than I remembered. It was so funny for me. I thought for sure that little drink was going to lead to big trouble for me and it in turn made me not want it even more.

Re: My Dear Friend Mt. Dew

Thanks for the support guys! I kind of had a rough week and fell off the bandwagon. But, I know now that I cannot let myself just have one soda, because one turns into two and so on. So I am getting back in the swing of things. I am having a hard time breaking my cravings, so I am letting myself have one crystal light in the morning and then I am going to ween myself off of that slowly(I get my biggest cravings for soda in the morning). I am dedicated!

I don't know why I want it so bad, it didn't even taste that good this time around.

I also have noticed that my headaches haven't come back yet...I find that strange. I figured that I would have to go through withdrawls again, so I am crossing my fingers on this one.
