Re: I am a SEVERE diet coke addict

    Hey bizzlekitty,
I noticed that you too have fibromyalgia. I gave up pop/soda cold turkey as well. At the end of this month I will celebrate 7 months pop free!
The thing I noticed right away was how much better I felt! My husband, who is a chemist, read somewhere that it's not so much the caffeine that effected my fibro but the carbonated water! All I know is since I've been off of it, my muscles feel so much better! Eating on Atkins is the bomb too! I feel amazing when I'm on program with regards to my fibro. Because I feel good I exercise more. My own endorphines take over and I don't have to take as many meds for my fibro.
Have you found the same for yours!

    Thanks for sharing!

For Diet Rite/Diet Coke w/ Splenda drinkers:

Is there a real difference in taste? After starting Atkins I switched to Diet Rite (1 can a day or less), then cut out soda pretty much completely. Now, however, I want some soda, and so I bought the Diet Coke w/ Splenda because it was cheaper. *Down side: DCwS has caffeine, I know.* Is there a noticeable taste difference? Because I'll bring back the DC if you all have said you don't like it as much as DR. Thanks!

Re: I am a SEVERE diet coke addict

I used to drink ALL of my drinks as diet coke. Usually 6-9 cokes a day. Nothing else.

Currently I'm limiting myself like this: I have a diet coke in the morning, one in the afternoon. First, I went from cans to 2-liters, to get used to actually pouring drinks. (Sounds stupid but you have to train yourself not to just grab that quick can first.)

From a 2-liter, I did about 5 oz each serving twice a day. I have a small cup that I use for the diet coke dose. The rest of the day I drink crystal light, water, decaf tea. I plan to cut back to 1 dose of diet coke soon, and then to none. And then I plan to drop off some of the tea. I'll keep the crystal light though, in moderation.

I still get evening caffeine headaches because I have limited myself to absolutely no caffeine after 3pm and my body doesn't get it yet. This is only day 10 so it's still adjusting.

But I do get to sleep earlier.

Yes, there is a big difference in taste (to me!) It's not horrible, I guess... but I just don't like it. I'd rather drink crystal light or decaf tea or water. I have a 2-liter of it on-hand. It still has caffeine, yeah, but mainly the taste is a very noticeable difference.

I wish they made it with vanilla, maybe it would mask the splenda taste...

Re: I am a SEVERE diet coke addict

Well done to everyone who is cutting down / has given up!

I drank two litres of coke a day for about 5 years then managed to switch it for diet coke. Then Last year I managed to get off the coke altogether, but still had cravings for fizzy drinks so started drinking about a litre a day of fizzy faloured water, sprite etc - whatever I wanted at the time...

... now I'm three days "fizz free" and only drinking water. I'm hoping that I can finally break my addiction!

Re: I am a SEVERE diet coke addict

OK - I was a diet Coke addict also. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I almost am convinced that they put something in their drinks to keep you coming back. Once I switched over to another diet cola sweetened with splenda and drank that instead - it was easier for me to break away from coke. Since I like iced tea, I now drink that mostly and I make sure it's decaf. Iced tea has helped me get off of soda - period and I do have diet Dr Pepper every once in a while. I occasionally have Diet Coke and all of a sudden I want more and more of it - and I don't even like the flavor compared to diet Dr Pepper. Go figure.

I actually like Diet Coke with Splenda

Ok, I have to be one of the minority here, but I actually like the DC with Splenda. However, I see it as a treat only. I can only have one if I have drunk at least 1 gallon of water prior to it. But, since I seem to have stopped losing I have given them up for now totally to see if I can get the scale to move at all!

Re: I am a SEVERE diet coke addict

Yep, that's me too, except I'm a Diet Dr. Pepper addict. I try to limit myself to one per day and drink a ton of water, but many days I don't drink all I should. For some reason, they think teachers should be in the classroom instead of running down the hall to the bathroom. Go figure. Why is caffeine discouraged?

                      Teachergirl,

Since I am no expert, I thought it best to quote to you from the "Atkins Bible".

                      From DANDR page 127...
"Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine".

                      From DANDR page 189

"Excessive caffeine...will provoke cravings and cause you to overeat". This paragraph goes on to explain that caffeine can stall the weight loss of many people.

                      Hope this helps!

Re: I am a SEVERE diet coke addict

caffeine is an insulin stimulant and in addition to messing with your blood sugar levels it is also a fat storing hormone making it harder for you to burn the fats you are eating for fuel and burning off the body fat you already got stored.

I want to speak to the person who made these dieting rules: WEIGHT ALWAYS COMES OFF SLOWER THAN IT GOES ON!!!!!! (Okay, truthfully it probably doesn't, but it sure seems that way.) I also love my morning coffee and decaf tastes like pond water to me. I'll try eliminating one or the other one day at a time until I am totally off the stuff......sigh.....surely I won't miss it.

                            Teachergirl,

You can do it. Just remember to stick to the induction list, avoid caffeine if you can, avoid all frankenfoods (processed foods with the words low-carb on them since they are the DEVIL), drink your water and exercise! You will be at goal in no time.

actually it doesn't really come off slower. you didn't gain it all in a day or even at the rate of a pound a day so many folk think they should lose it in.

You will do better to give it up cold turkey. in 3 dayd the physical addiction will be gone and you will just have some mental stuff to deal with. Take any caffeine free OTC pain med you want for the withdrawl headache.

                              Happy low carbing.
