Here's a little bit about me. when I was 16 I concieved my son with no problem, had no problem with the pregnancy and no problem with the birth or there after. Now I started my period when I was 11 and they have always been irregular. After the birth of my son I recieved the depo shot and I breastfeed until my son was 3 (god what was I thinking) while since that time I have gaind 100 pounds over the last 5 years. My period stopped last year in October and I have gained 30+ lbs. since then. Now I'm on the atkins diet and have been for one week, I have lost a good amount of weight and I had spotting yesterday; I was sooo happy. Now here comes the question I hade the same since I was 16 now if she thought I had PCOS would she have brought it up?? Her and another doctor both said that the reason I have not concieved yet is because of my weight. Which other people have told me too. So could I have PCOS???

Smile, you're story is just like mine except for the depro. I've never had birth control, but I conceived my son at 23 apparently no problem after always having irregular periods. I did have alot of problems during my pregnancy, and my son ended up being born at 2lbs. 3 oz. During the pregnancy I gained 85 pounds, and another 105 in the 5 years after. My periods were maybe once year after that. I got diagnosed with PCOS by my family doctor with a transvaginal ultrasound. He said he didn't know enough about it to treat me, and sent me elsewhere, and since him, no other doctor has had a clue. I went back and asked my doc to treat me, again he refused. So, here I am. I did have some spotting last year when I did the 6 months of Atkins straight, but the only 2 real periods I've had is last winter when I took Prednisone for a severe chest infection. Well, I had TOM, but combined with antibiotics, now I have candida! Its a good idea to go see a doctor, but you can really arm yourself against their ignorance by researching PCOS on the internet, finding out what tests to ask for, since many docs order insufficient or even wrong ones. Insist upon a glucose tolerance test, since the regular fasting glucose test does NOT accurately diagnose insulin resistance. And lo carbing is the best way to get the symptoms under control, but alot of ladies try Metformin, which is only available with a doc's prescription. You might also research your area for a gyno who is current in PCOS treatments. Hope this helps.

Atkins will result in your estrogen levels going up because of 2 reasons your first estrogen is stored in fat cells and some comes out with the fat molecules. next insulin has a negative effect on estrogen production and with your insulin production lowered more of your androgen precusors will be changed to estrogen. So weight loss will help you.
As to the PCOS you can ask for some tests from your doc to see if you have it but we have one memeber here tests not having it but her doc told her clinically she has it and is treating her for it.by the book atkinseer
