  • Check-In - How is everyone doing?

    Hey Ladies,
No one has posted in almost a month. No a single post! Wow. Well, I'm doing really great. It's been a little more than 2 months since I've been diagnosed with PCOS. I've been on birth control pills and guess what, I'm having regular periods! I'm am very excited about that! I'm also taking something for the facial hair and I really think it's starting to work (along with electrolosis). I've lost 14 pounds in the last 2 months (which is really great because I had a 2 week cheat). i can't wait to go back to my doc. in a few weeks, to show her that I'm losing! (She wanted me to go to weight watchers, but ugh, no thanks I would MUCH rather come here and "be with" you all!

    How is everyone else doing?
Come check in and let us know how things are going and what is working for you...

Wow, California casey, you are doing great! Are you taking Vaniqa for your hair growth? I was going to try it but when I found out how much a tube it was, forget it. I am paying for all my PCOS treatment out of my own pocket---no insurance---and I can't affort it. Congrats on the weightloss, I know it is hard! You are on your way!

As for me, still with no insurance, so my PCOS is going virtually untreated. I am trying to save money to see if I can get a doc to put me on glucophage and hope and pray that he will do it. Some of these doctors are such know-it-alls, they think that just because they never heard of glucophage helping with PCOS that it must be bunk.

I found a bald patch in my hair yesterday and it is making me upset, because I know that means I have really high androgen levels and not much I can do about it. I am scared that it may be leading to more patches to come. Anyways, I am still looking to be treated and having problems. What is everyonge else up to?

Thank you! Yes, it feels soooo slow and it gets really discouraging, but this WOE is the only way I've ever lost weight (except when I was training for a marathon 8 years ago and lost 30 lbs but I was running a min. of 3 miles a day 6 days a week. I can't do that in my current state : (

Anyway, for the facial (chin/neck hair) I'm on Spironolactone
        From the Mayo Clinic
        "
Medications for reducing excessive hair growth
Your doctor may add a medication to counter the effects of excess androgen. Spironolactone (Aldactone) blocks the effects of androgen and reduces new androgen production. Spironolactone was introduced as a water pill (diuretic) and may cause you to urinate more frequently. Other possible side effects are dry skin, heartburn, headaches and fatigue. Other anti-androgen medications are finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) and flutamide (Eulexin), but they are more expensive than spironolactone and tend to have more side effects.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a prescription cream for slowing facial hair growth in women. Eflornithine (Vaniqa) blocks the action of an enzyme in skin that stimulates hair growth. You apply it twice daily. Avoid using this medication during pregnancy."

Re: Check-In - How is everyone doing?

I wanted to try glucophage, but my doctor(s) said that they usually only put women who were trying to conceive on it. That I would be fine on the pill. I resisted because I really want to treat the insulin resistence (however they can't put me on both so I'm treating my insulin resistence with ATKINS) Also, I had to practically beg for the Spir. for my facial hair. They knew it was an option and DIDN'T offer it. I was actaully handed over from the nurse-practioner to the actual doctor because I was really upset that more couldn't be done about this.

Ok, another thing, I am REALLY concerned about you! Since you know you have PCOS you really shouldn't let it go untreated. It can lead to heart disease and diabetes. Really serious stuff. Do you have Kaiser in your area? They have a "personal advantage" program thats a little more than $115/month. If you don't have insurance through your job, you could apply for something like this and get treatment.

Esp. since you are experiecing more problems, I would urge you to NOT let this go.

Re: Check-In - How is everyone doing?

I was put on glucophage because I am insulin resistant. I was told that it would help regulate my insulin and with weight loss would help prevent me from becoming diabetic.

Re: Check-In - How is everyone doing?

Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 years ago, and have been on glugophage and progesterone since the begining. I just started atkins 10 days ago and have lost 8 lbs.

If your doctor doesn't want to give you glugophage, go to another doctor. You need to be treated, if you aren't treated then you can become a type 2 diabetic. If you can control your diet, you may eventually get off of glugophage, but if you are overweight like me, then you will need to prevent yourself from getting diabetis.
