  • UGH...PERIODS back, but no ovulation!

I've been trying for 7 years to get myself back to cycles/ ovulating, and have another child. Got my periods back, but not ovulation... I'm so frustrated about it. Was doing temp. charting, and every morning my temp is around 96.1 . I know this is really low, and I'm hoping I don't have a thyroid problem on top of PCO and yeast issues. All I can do is keep trying, right?

    Hi Maribelle,

I lurk a lot around here, but I don't usually post. However this post caught my attention. You say you hope that you don't have a thyroid problem, but your morning temp is around 96.1??? Low body temperature, especially when you first wake up, is a symptom of hypothyroidism. So is dry skin, hair falling out, menstrual issues, difficulty losing weight, feeling tired all the time despite excercise, etc. Please talk to your doctor and see if your thyroid might be causing the problems. I am hypothyroid but I am on medication and feel wonderful. I am also pregnant (after about 6 years of marriage and NO birthcontrol) and I believe it is because I got my thyroid issues straightened out, so PLEASE, talk to your doctor.

On a side note, I have an aunt (my mom's sister) who only has one child that took several years to conceive. She found out after extensive testing that she is one of the rare women who only ovulates while having a period, and thus she was able to conceive during that time . Sorry if TMI, but that might be something to ask about also. Sorry to write a book, but feel free to PM me if you would like to talk more.

well I'm sure you didn't know it but estrogen interferes with thyroid hormone transport. It reacts with proteins in the blood stream to make them act like glue and hold the thyroid hormones in the blood stream where they are not used and prevents them from accessing the cells where they are desperately needed. it will also cause the blood test to show a high concentration and mislead your doc in diagnoising it unless they are up on Thyroid treatment. get a full thyroid panel when you get tested and check your free thyroid hormone too.

Are you sure you are not ovulating? Could your tubes be blocked from any PCOS scarring?

Ok, I'm SO sorry I didn't get back here till now to read your posts. Actually...if I had waited 24 more hours, I would have never made this post. It seems I did finally O the next day, because my temp shot back up to 98.7. This is the first time I ever tried charting, and basal body temperature taking, etc. For 6 years I would only have a period once maybe twice a year, and it was anything but normal in length and flow. Now if my charting is right, I'm having a 35 day cycle instead of a 28 day one, and this will be my third in a row. Definitely an improvement. Now I'm waiting to see if my temps stay up and wether or not my period comes again.
I have had my thyroid tested several times, but it always reads normal. If my period doesn't come, I will consider checking with my doctor. He's not one that will automatically schedule a series of tests just becaues I want one. Thank you for all your advice. I do appreciate it, and am giving it careful consideration.

Re: UGH...PERIODS back, but no ovulation!

I am right with ya Mari! I have a temp about the same and it is not uncommon. My blood work, which I had done last week, also came back normal. Here are some things that I was told that may help you/give you something to think about. One, my doctor told me that because of the weight gain and our (women with PCOS) problems with Estrogen, our weight has a lot to do with ovulation and conception. When we are overweight to a point, the body startes storing estrogen into our fat andwe basically get overloaded with estrogen; that in turn sends the ovaries a signal to stop ovulating because it thinks you are not trying to get pregnant or something like that he said. Its not word for word but it was in that realm. I remember most of what he said (I was too busy being bummed out). He feels that I can and probably the only way I am going to get pregnant is to lose enough weight to stop my body from storing the excess estrogen. What the magic number on the scale is, is anybody's guess he said but I would probably need to get down around where I was when I miscarried my first angel--around 300lbs or less.

The other thing is, he said, when you lose weight, especially over a period of time and a large amount, around 60 or 70 lbs or more, your body is kind of in a whirlwind. You've changed your eating, getting healthy, exercising, etc. things your body is not used to and needs to take time to adjust to. Once your body establishes its new setpoint, starts to realize that what you are doing is "normal", then it will relax and let nature take its course---he said usually about 6 months to a year if you stay at a steady weight (which SUCKS). Having said that, there are other things to consider--which is where costs of infertility start. Have you had an HSG? or an ultrasound? Then you have to consider maybe it is the hubby. Has he had a sperm analysis? Have you tried using Clomid yet? Or you waiting a bit on that? If you do try Clomid, convince your doctor to also prescribe Metformin with it. There was a study that they found that 60% of PCOS women get pregnant with Clomid when they were also prescribed Metformin as well, they don't know why as of yet. Well, those are just some things to think about or look at. I am trying the losing weight thing first and if that doesn't work, then I will try CLomid/Metformin. At my age, I can't afford to wait much longer. Good luck, Mari, and as always you know you can PM me.

Mari, talk to your doctor about the Clomid. That was what worked for me (I think). I have since tried it again and it has not worked. This has been on and off for 4 years now. I used to have a 33 day cycle but since losing weight it has settled around 28. I feel okay about that but I still can't tell when and if I really am ovulating. All very frustrating but it is nice to know we are not alone in this thing.
