  • Policystic Ovary Syndrome

Do any of you ladies has knowlege or experience of this condition?

I have read that it is associated with overweight and with difficuly metabolising carbohydrates.

What can anyone tell me? Internet links would be helpful.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Learn how Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is linked to insulin resistance, weight gain, infertility, and diabetes. Discover new treatments, including lifestyle changes, medications, and clinical insights.

I don't know if you have it in the UK, but the current Low Carb Living Magazine has an article about PCO.

I have it, and since starting Atkins, many of the symptoms: no periods, acne, etc. has alleviated, or gone away. You can do a lookup on PCOS and you will get lots of sites related to it.

My SIL has PCOS and I know that it is also associated with Diabetes. Not all diabetics have PCOS and not all PCOS sufferers have Diabetes, but there seems to be a link between to two dieseases.

Her doctor told her that there may be a connection between PCOS and an anit-nausea drug given to her mother during pregnancy.

BTW, my SIL got pregnant w/ artifical insemination, and she's going in this morning to be induced.

          PCO's

I have had PCOS since I was 17 and had to have Lyposcopic Surgery to have some large cysts removed(one about the size of a grapefruit). They then put me on the pill to suppress them because I was told that I needed more Progestron in my body.
I went off of them for a month years later because my boyfriend was gone and I was never that great at remembering to take them on time anyway. They came back 10 Fold in a month! My OBGYN yelled at me and told me I can not go off of B.C. unless I am trying to get pregnant and that will take some planning.
I was not very big @ 17. Maybe 5'2" 120lbs so as far as it being a weight issue I dont think so. Maybe it could be to raise the risk %. As far as carbs, I am sure I was eating a load of them then. What to eat and what not to eat was not an issue to me then.
I do know that I have had small ones but nothing of concern. I also was told when I had a DNC about 2 yrs ago that I have a small showing of endometriosis and about 5 yrs ago had abnormal cells (the begginings of cancer)on my cervix that they froze. My Paps have been normal since.

Maybe the PCOS are just in my genetics and the Weight and Carb issue didn't necessarily apply to me but could to others??

As a side note...I have switched from B.C. Pills to NuvaRing and Love it!
Nothing to think about or remember. My first set came with an Hourglass timer (digital) that counts off the days and an alarm goes of to remind me to remove or replace. Its GREAT!!

Hi, I have PCO, and so do many women here. I did alot of research when I first got diagnosed, and the majority of women who stuck to a low carb diet got immediate and major results. As for birth control, the women on the PCOS forum I used to belong to all complained it masked the symptoms while on them, but when they came off the symptoms came back almost immediately and worse than ever. I've never taken them myself, so I can't say anything from experience. You might want to read the post a little further down on this page called "Calling all Pcosisters" . A lot of gals with PCO posted there, and you might be able to PM any one of them for more info. Hope this helps.

I wonder if this is what I have.....When I was 13 i had immense pain throughout my abdomena nd lower back to the point where my mother took me to the hospital. I had just started my period a few months before. After the ultrasound they said i had several ovarian cysts and started me on the pill right away. I have been on the Pill ever since. Since this all happened when i was 13, I don't really remember what the doctors said that much and the pain and cysts bursting went away about six months after i began the pill.

I always wondered what everyone was talking about with PCOS but didn't know it had anything to do w/ovarian cysts or being overweight or low carb being able to help it. Maybe I can finally go off the pill someday? I am definetly going to ask my doctor about it!

I have PCOS too. I didn't know that I had it until last year when I ended up in the ER with pain in my right side. (I am 28 years old, btw..lol) At first they thought it was either my appendix or gallbladder, but after ultrasounds and a scan, they found that my ovary was swollen larger than a grapefruit and was full of cysts, it also had twisted since it was so large, and I ended up having the ovary and fallopian tube removed.

I am now on BC pills and I am going to have to go to an Endocrinologist.

I am also doing Atkins to help with my weight, and so far, so good! :icondance

Wow...I didn't know you could have so much pain with this. I was diagnosed 4 years ago, and I've never had actual pain in my ovaries. Now I'm kind of nervous. The last time I had a pap smear, the gyn. said my ovaries felt normal, but that was almost 3 years ago. Did you have any pain before that could of warned you, or was the pain when it twisted the first sign you had? Man, is this PCOS a curse, or what?

I did have some pain off and on in my side before it became twisted but I chalked it up to me being so overweight. If I would have known what I know now, I would have went to the Dr and had it checked out. I had no idea what PCOS was before, I just thought I was cursed with being overweight and hairy.

                          There ARE others!

I've done a lot of reading up on PCOS and there are a lot of good sites out there on the subject but not many doctors with knowledge on treating it. Several years ago I worked out with a personal trainer - worked my buns off and toned up but could not lose and ounce of fat even though I was on a diet (WW). It was very disappointing to say the least to work so hard with limited results. I knew I had PCOS but the Dr. who diagnosed me put me on Spironolactone and BC with no other information on the subject. It causes your body to react to carbs and sugars almost in the same way a diabetic does. On all the sites I've read they say for suffers of this that Atkins is a good way to reduce weight and reduce the symptoms. We'll see how it works!
