  • Questions for the Endocrinologist

My long awaited Endo appointment is next Monday. Woohoo!

I was referred due to the fact that I hadn't had a period in 4 months along with a whole lot of other PCOX symptoms. I had suspected PCOS for years and the my primary doctor agreed and wrote out a referral. This was at my well woman visit on the 29th of December. The earliest the Endo could schedule the appointment was for the 13th of March.

Since going in in Dec. I started back on Atkins (Jan. 30) due to the fact that I was able to restart my period once before by going on Atkins and loosing weight. It took a month but the period returned (some early spotting and a lot of bloating earlier in the month right after starting but TOM came for real last week.) I've lost some weight and I'm feeling much better.

I'm trying to get my ducks in a row concerning things I want/need to talk to the Endo. about. My fear is that I'll get in there and forget a hundred things I need to ask. I want to make a list of things I should focus on.

    Here is my start...

1.)Official diagnosis of PCOS (what's involved, what are the treatment options)
    2.)Pregnancy/Conception Issues
3.) Other health issues to watch for

    I'm just brainstorming for now.

What would you guys ask (or did ask)?

    Re: Questions for the Endocrinologist

they will take a lot of blood for testing and stuff so just keep eating your Atkins and see. Ask them about their recommended treatment plans and if they have any medical studies you can see dealing with those treatments. that lets them knowyou are serious and will not be a yes sir patient and are going to check this out.

once they figure out all that is wrong and what is correctably you can go from their but until they know what you got and how involved your conditon is there really isn't much wecan tell you since treatments for insulant resistance will not work on scarring issues.

take your pad and take great notes and if they go too fast for you ask them to repeat it and speel it too. don't be afraid to ask questions. and ask them what if I think of more stuff later too.

    Congrats on starting TOM again.

        Re: Questions for the Endocrinologist

I know one thing I wanted to ask, but forgot was...once they straighten out the PCOS what happens to the cysts (eggs) in the ovaries that were never released? Will they dissolve? Will they be expelled? Will they even go away?

I've been on BC pills (Yasmin) for one month now and I've been thinking about this. If the pills make your body think it is preg, then it is not going to release an egg (you'll get preg) so the only thing the BC pills are doing is cleaning my uterus and giving me a regular period. That's when I started thinking about the ovaries...what's being done to help them? From what I've read is that since the eggs aren't being release; neither is progesterone -- which then is causing me to have too much estrogen and very low progesterone. But, I don't think the dr it treating me to help raise those levels. And, he is not one you can ask questions of, he gets a little impatient and tells me not to read too much on the internet and just let him handle it.

Another thing I was curious about was: if your dr prescribes BC pills and they increase your potassium levels, why do they not do a blood profile with your starting potassium level and check it every so often? (My dr didn't tell me about this nor did he test me...or ask me about blood clots in my family before he gave me the BC pills. I got more reading the insert in the prescription than from him.)

Anyway, these are some things I question. If you get to ask your dr, please let us know.

        Thanks!

          Re: Questions for the Endocrinologist

Well, today was the Endo. appointment. First off...it was the slowest doctor's office I've EVER been in. Grrr. However, the doctor was VERY pleasant. To make a long story short, we spoke about PCOS. He took a history, reviewed my Jan. labs, and did a short physical checkup. He felt that due to my raised glucose levels and PCOS symptoms that everything added up to PCOS. He had blood drawn, prescribed Met., and scheduled a follow up appointment on April. 10th.

              Re: Questions for the Endocrinologist

He didn't officially say "PCOS." He wants to run bloodwork and things first but he agreed that the symptoms all add up to PCOS. He explained how it is believed that PCOS works (all of which I read before hand...a lot of thanks go to you ladies). He'll says they'll take more blood next time also. It will give them 3 sets of data. PreAtkins, Atkins alone, and Met + Atkins + Exercise (just joined Curves last week). He seemed more concerned with my glucose from Jan. 3 (123) than anything else. I asked whether the Met would help with other PCOS issues (loosing hair on my head, facial hair, etc.) He said it would but he did kinda dismiss it as minor ("cosmetic," he said.) I almost smarted off that cosmetic does not necessary equal to not important but I held my tongue. Afterall, he did say that it would help. I think it will be interesting to see the comparision of the 3 sets of blood data.

                Re: Questions for the Endocrinologist

i understand you anger but he is looking at saving your ovaries and tubes from scarring, assisting you in getting prego and keeping you from sufferring long term fatal diabetic complications if he is correct about you having PCOS so the cosmetic issue would be minor changes to him.

                  Re: Questions for the Endocrinologist

Oh I wasn't angry. My mouth sometimes get the best of me though and I'm working at not zinging comments back in an effort to be tactful. I'm grateful for the time he spent with me and his patience in explaining things. Honestly, I can't remember when a doctor has spent so much time with me. He's an older doctor and I usually seek out younger female doctors. This was a referral. Overall, it was a very satisfactory experience. His "bedside manner" was a bit different from what I'm used to but that's OK.

OH...and I forgot to mention....while he didn't give Atkins a ringing endorsement, he didn't disparage it either. I told him up front that I was doing Atkins while he was taking a history. Later when he was going over meds and such he threw in "and your happy doing atkins?" When I answered yes, he said "oh, Ok." and kept on talking about other things.
