        Re: Members with PCOS please click here.

        Almost all of my PCOS symptoms clear up when I'm doing Atkins like I'm supposed to. In fact, when I was on Atkins several years ago and lost a bunch of weight, my doctor took me off of metformin and my hbp pills.

          Just wondering who takes metformin or insulin sensitisers to help with their symptoms in addition to diet

          medication alone doesnt help. Neither does diet alone. Both together does the trick well

            Actually diet alone did help me. I still have half a bottle of 7 year old Metformin in my cupboard if anybody wants some though. I stopped taking it because it didn't seem logical. I was taking it to help my body process certain foods that it couldn't deal with anymore due to my being IR. I had stopped eating those foods, so I would take the Metformin... why? (besides, it made me SO ill... it's pratically what drove me to Atkins in the first place!)

              I am basically doing the same thing you are... just pill and diet/exercise;

              as for atkins and pcos

              Started Atkins again after baby on 1/1/09 lost went from 232- 210 until around 3/12/09 when my mother in law passed away.

              Restarted Atkins 4/20/09 @ 216; currently 187. Hope to get to 125 per my doctors goal. (I'm 5'1").

              Doctor felt like my ovaries just needed a break hence the pill. Now I'm having hormonal issues - but no meds yet; the doc is trying to find out why I'm having issues with just the FSH & LH being too low (rather than high)

                Re: Members with PCOS please click here.

                I have PCOS and yet I don't have medical insurance so I'm not seeing a doctor, I'm trying to manage my PCOS on my own. I wanted to lose weight, and when I realized that I was IR, I figured Atkins would be the best diet for me. I have never taken birth control because I can't get pregnant (at least not in this condition) and I've never taken metformin or any medication for PCOS. I'm going to look into herbal remedies though. I would really love to find out if anyone with PCOS has succeeded in actually ridding themselves of the symptoms by doing Atkins. I really hope that someday I can live like a normal human being...it just seems impossible.

                  Be careful!! Many "Atkins babies" have been born because of women that thought they couldn't get pregnant and then went on Atkins. Which is great if that's what you WANT, but not so great if you don't!

                  Atkins eliminated my acne, reduced facial hair by about 50%, regulated my periods and fixed a whole bunch of other PCOS related stuff. Getting rid of heartburn, headaches and fatigue was also a bonus. I'm sure there was more, but it's honestly been so long I can't remember it all. Sure, people think you're crazy "but thus bread is SO GOOD!" but who cares? Feeling 'normal' is great!! And soooo worth it.

                    Thanks for writing back...its really good to hear from someone who has had positive changes with their PCOS from Atkins. I have been on it for almost 2 months now and I don't really seem to see a lot of changes in my PCOS symptoms , how long did it take you to see those changes you mentioned?

                    And if I get pregnant with an "Atkins Baby", all the better! I'd LOVE to have a child, after worrying for so long about whether or not I'll ever actually have children, I would just be ecstatic. Anyway, thanks again for writing, hope to talk to you soon!

                      I'd say I noticed things like acne going away and more regular periods within a month or two, and stuff like facial hair growth after closer to the first year. Not sure really. Realizing things like "Oh, I haven't had heartburn or a headache in months!" is kind of fun though.

                        I love finding fun things like that out! I think that my headaches are always more manageable when I am eating low carb. Even when I was doing low glycemic, and eating things like pasta and corn on a regular basis, my headaches were much more manageable.

                          Have you tried to get pregnant at all? I know for me, I was able to concieve my first daughter on Metformin, and after several months of Clomid, it just happened on an off month when I was not taking anything. I found out later, while trying to concieve #2 that I had a polyp in my uterus that was blocking one of my falopian tubes. I had to have surgery and then, at that time, they found that I had mild endometreosis as well as several small fibroids and while they fixed all that mess, they did ovarian drilling as well. Best part of that was the pictures I got to see after. I could not believe that was me! I took injectible fertility meds after the surgery and then had two IUIs and the second one worked. Without medical insurance, I know that it is a different story for you...but I wish you luck and hope that you can keep doing whatever you can on your end without a doctor right now.
