  • Question in regards to the metformin

Hi--- Well I am new to Atkins-- have been doing it for about 3 months now-I have PCOS and was diagnosed about 2-3 years ago. I have two children 10 and 6 we have been trying for quite some time now for another but I have had a misscarriage about 3 years ago and then last November 2003 I had a daughter Grace, she was stillborn at 6 months along. I concieved both of them using very high doses of Clomid a fertility drug. We have been trying for 10 months again with no luck and I really dont want to go back on fertility drugs. My question for anyone is I have been prescribed Metformin but really have not started takeing it yet. Can you do the Atkins and metformin together????

My symptoms are overweight, period only a couple of times a year however in the last six months I get it about every 8 weeks now. Facial hair, infertility, etc.....

I have seen fertility specialist and he says PCOS.

I am so glad to see this site. I believe there are so many people suffering from PCOS and really have not been diagnosed as of yet. Hopefully they can find information out here also.

    Thanks for any input
I would appreciate any help you offer.

    Hi Amy and Welcome, :wave

First, let me extend my condolences for your loss.

As far as usining Metformin (also know as Glucophage), it can be used along with doing Atkins. In fact, not to say that this is your situation, but many Type II Diabetics here on ha use it.

So it should be alright to use it.

The best of luck in everything and keep us posted on how you're doing!!

      Sorry about your loss

Did your doctor explain why they gave you the metaphorin for your PCOS? you must have tested positive ofr insulin ressitance.

Atkins works to help cure that too so both of them together should help you with not only weight loss if you need that but also to treat your PCOS.

Thank You for your information. I have started the Metformin today!!! Hopefully between the Atkins and Metformin I can loose the weight I need and treat the PCOS.

I did get the 3hr Glucose test done and I was only 25 points from failing. Diabetes is also in my family and I had Gestational with both my kids.

Hopefully with the support here and my determination to try and have another child I will suceed!!!! Thank You for all your help

          Hi Amy!

First, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I, as a fellow PCOSer know the pain and frustration that comes along with this disorder. I was diagnosed 10 years ago at the age of 18. I currently take 600mg of Met a day, along with EffexorXR to combat the depression associated with PCOS. When on Clomid to concieve my daughter back in 97, I gained a lot of weight. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone here in this battle. Most of all, I want you to know, there is hope! I have been doing Atkins WOL since March 2004 and I have currently lost 100 pounds! The biggest challenge for me was beating the carb cravings. As you know, PCOSers crave them way more than a "normal" person would. Hang in there, as soon as you start to see those pounds melt away, it gets easier and easier! I wish you the best of luck with your weight loss and the conception of a baby. Lots of baby dust to you! :hug

Hi, I am new to this forum, and very glad to see it.

After being on metaformin, 850mg at least twice a day for sixs months, I am now ovulating, it seems regularly, have had a period every month for the last two months.

I am also diabetic, began low carbing and exercising at that time as well. I've also been super emotional, weepy at bad movies and such, feeling "hormonal" ALOT. so I think the estrogen is starting to kick in.

            Good Luck :icondance

Amy, best of luck to you with the Metformin. I tried it for two weeks, and had immediate results as far as weight loss went, but I was doing Atkins at the same time. I couldn't handle the side effects and the cost. So far Atkins alone has been working wonders. Best of luck to you in your conception attempts, and hope you pop in here often. I too am trying to conceive again, so we can give each other encouragement. Merry Christmas everyone.

Also, Fatkitty, so glad to hear you are doing so well and ovulating. Its such a great feeling, isn't it? Are you trying to conceive?

You can do Atkins and take Metformin, but I (and many others) have gone off metformin because of Atkins. You don't really NEED the metformin if you stick to Atkins. It helps with insulin resistance, which really isn't an issue if you're low-carbing. (provided you're not a full-blown diabetic, etc.) And many, MANY women have found themselves able to concieve and carry to term when they had not been able to before, because of a low-carb lifestyle. Most PCOS forums have scores of such stories in their archives.

                Good luck!
100 pounds gone forever from 12/03-11/04. Thank you Dr. Atkins, may you rest in peace...

hello everyone--- just thought I would write and say a BIG THANK YOU to all who wrote me---- I found out right before christmas I was allmost seven weeks pregnant!!!! I am so excited !!!! No drugs this time either--- I strongly believe that if it were not for the Atkins diet and lowering my blood sugar levels and loosing weight I never would have become pregnant!!!! I know this because for teh last 3-4 years this is the first time I have conceived a child without major doses of fertility drugs!!!!

                  Thanks for all your support!!!
