      Re: Question for Biogeek

I am so upset biogeek. It's 1am in the morning and I am crying because I am having trouble losing weight. I found that I have had to go down to about 10g carbs a day to lose weight and am not having much veg. I have lost 1 kilo and 5 inches since going down to 10 carbs. Everyone is bullying me I feel about how I'm not having much veg. I have my teas and cheese and cream etc and there isn't much carbs left for veg. I wa sonly going to do this low veg thing for about 4 weeks until I lose maybe 14 pounds and then add veg back in 5s and lose another 20 pounds slowly with more veg. However as soon as I say that I have only about 6 veg carbs and a multi vitamin and mineral supplement, people (like my naturopath) get angry with me and say that I'm going to get really sick and that "you'll put the weight on when you add the veg as your body isn't use dto it or something". I have found something that works, is not having veg for 4 weeks evil? I will introduce it back, I love veg, mounds of the stuff.
I just can't stop crying. I think I'm emotionally and physically exhausted from trying to lose weight.

        Re: Question for Biogeek

I'm sorry you're so upset, Sue. I can understand about losing weight REALLY slowly. That's how I am & it took me awhile to get over that. You said you lost 1 kilo and 5 inches...how long did that take? I would be pretty happy about losing 5 inches!! Good job!!

As far as not having any veggies, most people will tell you that you need veggies to have a healthy life. However, if you look at certain groups of people, such as the Alaskian Eskimos, their diet is almost 100% fat. They are incredibly healthy, even with the lack of veggies. So, it's not evil or a sin not to have veggies, but certainly you will be lacking in certain nutrients that may not be in supplements and of course fiber. Do we need all those nutrients? Maybe, maybe not. However, taking the supplement will certainly help you in getting the major nutrients that we need.

Would you mind posting a sample menu of what you eat in a day? We can go over it together and see what can be improved. Just to remind you, Atkins is a high fat diet, not a high protein one.

As far as your body adding weight as soon as you start adding veggies back is a bunch of baloney. One issue, however, is that if you eat certain veggies, you may become bloated & constipated, but then your body will get over that in a day or two. That would happen though to anyone not used to eating certain veggies. Not all veggies will do that though. Broccoli comes to mind.

If you have a copy of DANDR, Atkins has a chapter in there about the Fat Fast. I would suggest that you read that chapter.

My other question to you is with regards to exercise. You definately need to exercise not matter what diet you're following. Exercise is not an option, but a requirement to the Atkins lifestyle.

Many hugs to you, Sue. I know it can get really frustrating, but hang in there! You are certainly not alone in this battle! Please let me know how you are doing.

          Re: Question for Biogeek

          Hi Biogeek

Just a quick post. Thanks for the support. I lost 1 kilo or 2.25 pounds 5 inches in a week on 10 g of carbs. That was last week! For the next week I'll stay on 10 and then add back 3 g increments of veg each week and see how far I can go without falling out of ketosis or stop losing weight.

I'll post my menu later, I have to look after my toddler now so I better get going. Talk to you soon.

            Re: Question for Biogeek

Sue, it seems like you have a plan and it works for you. I just reread my last post to you and realized when I wrote "broccoli comes to mind," I made it seem like broccoli was the type of veggie that doesn't cause bloating. It _does_, and for many people.

You may have to experiment and see which ones will cause your GI tract to be upset, but for some folks, cabbage, onions, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts, etc are prime culprits. Bloating can be a combo of excess gas and water retention, which will make it seem that you're not losing any weight or at least, very little. Keep this in mind when you're adding back your veggies.

Also, certain types of cheese can do the same thing as well.

            Enjoy your day!
