  • Just been diagnosed

    Hi everyone,
I am only a newbie to the boards. On friday i was diagnosed with PCOS, before then i actually had never heard of it! The only reason i found out was due to me being an egg donor for a friend, I had to have a scan to check my ovaries and that coupled with my lack of regular periods, constant cramping and bloated feelings even without the periods, the specialist gave me the diagnosis! I have 3 children which i now know I am very lucky to have conceived, as i said i only found out on friday so its all very new to me..

    Re: Just been diagnosed

I'm sorry that you have received this diagnosis. It is great that you were able to have your children, though! There is a lot of good informtion out there, online and in bookstores. Did your doctor start you on Metformin? That is usually one of the first steps for getting PCOS under control. Atkins should also help a lot. Are they allowing you to go ahead with egg donation? It is somewhat difficult to regulate the fertility drugs you will need with your PCOS. If you go ahead, they will have to watch you very closely so that you don't get Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome.

Good luck to you and welcome to the board!

      Re: Just been diagnosed

      Hi Ann,
Thanks for the info, I am on no meds at the moment, I have to go back to the specialist this wk. Yes I am still allowed to go through with the donation, I have been explained the risks and the dr has told me that he needs to be extra careful with the hyperstimulation. This was the whole reason to check on the scan to see how my ovaries were so he can be well and truly prepared when i start my drugs etc. Sometimes I feel so cramped and bloated in my abodomen that i really feel like a huge big period would be great just to flush it all out and give me some relief! Not sure this would actually happen tho

        Re: Just been diagnosed

I got OHSS WITHOUT trying to donate eggs...In fact, when I hyperstimulated, I only had 4 mature follicles. I was in the hospital for a week with severe kidney issues and dehydration. My Dr was an idiot, though, and didn't even warn me that women with PCOS are more prone to OHSS. Just be very careful...OHSS is NOT FUN!
