  • PCOS-- QUESTION ABOUT ATKINS DURING PREGNANCY

Hello everyone--- I was on the Atkins to loose some weight, which I did !!!! I lost about 25 pounds in a couple of months. I had written to this PCOS site before christmas and had some great people respond to me. I have PCOS --- I have had a terrible time getting pregnant I have 2 terrific children age 6 and 10. I have since had a misscarriage and a baby girl that was stillborn. I took Clomid with both of these pregnancies--Not that I am saying it had anything to do with what happend to me but I did want to try and concieve this time without any drugs!!!! and thanks to Atkins and loosing some weight ---I am now 11 weeks pregnant!!! I found out right before christmas I was 6 weeks pregnant!!!! So I really wanted you guys to know that the Atkins really helped me!!!! I do have a question if someone could help me----I am going in allready for a Glucose test this week ---How do you or can you still continue with the Atkins while pregnant??? I know I will have Gestational Diabetes again. I barely passed my test before I was pregnant!!!! I have not been doing any kind of Atkins diet since I found out I was pregnant ---but I really need to control my carbs!!!!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
I would appreciate any help you offer.

Re: PCOS-- QUESTION ABOUT ATKINS DURING PREGNANCY

    Hi Amy and welcome!! :wave

First of all let me extend to you well wishes with your pregnancy!!

As far as doing Atkins, in DANDR Version 2002, on page 93, Dr. Atkins states the following:

...pregnant women and nursing mothers may do the Lifetime Maintenance phase, but should not do any of the weight loss phases of Atkins.

HeyAmy!!! What wonderful news!!! I'm so happy for you, and it is so encouraging for me. I'm wishing you a beautiful healthy baby in 33 weeks!
I think maintenance is the way to go...find out how many carbs you can have, and not gain more than "baby" weight, and maybe make sure they come from such things as fresh veggies, fruit, and whole grains and you should do fine. Definitely don't do lypolisis, since the chemical it releases can harm the baby.
Send some happy little baby vibes my way, ok? Congrats! :joy

woo hoo know you do know you will show a false positive for diabetus based on your low carbing reaction to the sudden ingestion of the sugar fluids. Dr Atkins and most docs will tell you you have to preload for 3 days prior to the test to get an accuarate result.

Remember that for you maintenance many be just 60 or 70 net carbs it is one carb more then your CCLL was. You can go to the Atkins.com site and read an article by one of the dieticians on staff there who carried twins to term eating Atkins matenance and see what she ate ther link is in one of the posts in the preg forum
