  • Just diagnosed with PCOS and have some questions...

I went to the Dr. last Thursday and was diagnosed with PCOS. Can someone tell me if I have this right? The Dr. told me that if I were to lose 10-15% of body weight, that my ovaries will begin to work again and I will have more normal periods. As of right now, I have had normal periods every month, except when I had my iud in, and then in May I stopped having periods altogether. Have not had one without medication since. I am starting atkins because I heard that the best thing to do for PCOS is to go on a low carb diet. My mom tried atkins a couple of years ago and had pretty good success. I already have one daughter who is 4 so this had to have come on with the weight that I gained after she was born.
My questions are... is it likely that my periods will return with the weight loss and ovulation will start again?
Will the PCOS always be there no matter what I do from now on, even after losing the weight?
    Thanks to everyone in advance.

This is the second time trying Atkins and hopefully this time it will be a permanent life change for me.

For me even hitting goal of 134 and staying there a few years the pcos was still there. Better but still there. My periods were more regular but not every 28 days.
It definately helps though so keep it up!

I've been on Atkins since May. I'm on the pill so I can't tell about the periods. But Atkins definitely helped with my acne roseca. My face was always bright red and broken out but since Atkins its cleared up big time. I still have PCOS but with the pill and the diet things have gotten much better on my end.

Welcome to the board and to this way of eating. I am sorry to hear that you have PCOS. I know what you mean about the period problems. I'm having them as well but the opposite of you. Mine are lasting for 30 days at a time and then going off one week only to start again. I'm hoping losing weight will help fix that.

I'm looking forward to reading more of your posts.

absolutely losing 10-15% of your body weight will certainly help. That is how i got pregnant.I was taking metformin too.But had been taking it 3 years and did not get pregnant but when i lost 10% of my body weight i got pregnant.I figured 10% of my body weight and that is how many pounds i told myself i had to lose.good luck

Thank you guys for all of your comments. I have been on atkins now for two weeks and one day and have lost 14 pounds so far. I am pretty excited about that. I have noticed that my skin looks a lot better "For_My_2Boys". I am very prone to acne but I have had a LOT less now that I found this new WOE. I am so hoping that I can lose this weight and hopefully be able to get pregnant again. I am not on any medicine right now. The doctor gave me an rx for if I miss a period for four months or more again, but other than that he just told me to try and lose weight and that will help my chances a lot. If I lose the weight ( he said about 10-15% as well) then I should start to get my periods back! "Mothette": I could not imagine having a period for 30 days at a time! It would get really old so fast. I don't know how you deal with it and still keep your sanity.

Re: Just diagnosed with PCOS and have some questions...

I was diagnosed with PCOS about Thanksgiving time - after a month-long "seige" kind of period. I've had a whopping total of 4 weeks without a period since the middle of October. 1 week here and there.

My doctor had a full blood work up because PCOS isn't always a problem caused by weight. Since then, she's been treating me with YAZ (birth control) and natural progesterone cream - I have some follow up blood work due in 3 weeks. The heavy period symptoms have eased, but this last period has been going for 4 weeks, in spite of the YAZ.

              It's really frustrating, for sure!
