I do know that estrogen is stored in our fat cells, and when we shed fat, the estrogen kind of runs amock in your system, causing irregular (for regular women) periods. I would assume it is the same for you (not that you aren't *regular*, I mean just regular in that way LOL).....
I am anxious to hear if this continues, my periods went back to normal after about 4 months (cramps never left sadly)
Soooooooo, welcome to womanhood?????

After being on atkins for a month and a half I had my first period in TWO years. I had a gyn appt last week and spoke to my doc about that. She believes I have PCOS because of all of the symptoms...and my weight.
The doc said it was NO coincedence that after losing a little weight my period started. It had happened once before when I tried weight watchers. Many obese women who are insulin resistant or who have PCOS stop having periods and stop ovulating when their bodies reach a certain weight. It is because excess adipose tissue (fat) also creates more of the horemone testoterone. This will stop ovualtion and cause many of the other symptoms we just *love* :yikes about PCOS.....like abnormal hair growth....
So yep...this does happen....happened to me just last week

Well here's my story got the dianosis in 1992 Pcos I'm 39 years old started Atkins April 26,2004 I have lost 70lb and Pcos has played **** with my body i'm extreamly over weight have High blood pressure diabetes you Name it I have it from pcos but things have changed my diabetes is under control my blood pressure is under control and I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my first child :icondance I love you DR Atkins

actually it isn't that the fat cells make too much of the androgen it is that with the insulin resistance the body doesn't convert the androgen to estrogen like normal nonPCOS folk do. as you control your blood sugars your body releases less insulin and your tissues again become sensitive to it and the massive amount of insulin not being needed then doesn't interfer with this conversion.
So you get more estrogen which you needed to have a period and be a normal fertile female (better look into some birth control if you were using that as your BC and less androgen left to make those male charactersitics PCOS folk have.
Thanks for the explanation 2big.....That makes so much sense to me! I told my hubby last night that we need to be extra cautious because we do not want any children lol.....and with the positive changes atkins has had on my body so far...BAM I might just end up pregnant if we are not cautious lol.
