  • PCOS, Atkins and glucose tolerance tests

    Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me with this question. I am scheduled to have a glucose tolerance test next week to check my insulin resistance and see if I am prediabetic. (My doctor has concerns and also believes I have PCOS since I have most of the symptoms) I am concerned about what taking the test will do to my progess. I have been in ketosis since beginning in Atkins in mid-December but I lose very slowly. I am concerned that the test is going to knock me out of ketosis because I have to drink a sugary liquid to be tested. UGH!

I am concerned that I will have trouble getting back into ketosis after the test. I also know I am probably going to be sick afterward because I have not had sugar in almost two months. Once I had a small amount in a meal (it was disguised in a sauce) and I was VERY sick.

I am thinking about refusing the test because I also am having about 5 other tests done that are not going to affect my diet. I had a full fasting blood panel done recently and everything was normal.

Have any of you had the test done while on atkins?? What happened with your progress? Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Kat, you need to take the test, so thats number one. What I suggest is that when your done, just go back on strict induction until you get back into ketosis. It shouldn't take more than a few days, then once there, start working back up to where you were.

as soon as the test is over restart your Atkins. take an atkins meal with you as you will need it after that.

Check out the section on GTT in DANDR you have to pr4eload with carbs or you will test false positive for diabetes so make sure you ask your doc about that 3 days of carb loading stuff. they actuaklly give you a high carb food list to be eating from for the loading Dr Atkins discussed it too.

Hi and thanks for your replies :hug

I have thought about it alot and decided not to take the test. It is my personal choice and my right to refuse it so I am going to refuse this test ...for now. My doc already scheduled about 8 other blood tests for me to check for the symptoms of PCOS (ie. hormones etc...) I just do not want to put my body through the test right now. I feel good and I don't want to feel like crap and get sick....Maybe in a year when I am closer to my goal I will have it checked..... All of my other bloodwork (done just two months ago) indicated that I have very low risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. My blood sugar was just fine and so were my triglycerides and cholesterol.....My blood pressure is on the low to normal side. ...anyway, sorry to yammer on.....lol I just thought about this ALOT and decided I will do ALL of the tests the doc ordered except for the glucose tolerance until I am closer to my weight loss goal.

          Good for you.

even if you were an insulin resitant PCOSer eating Atkins will assist you with curing your resistance Dr Atkins discusses it in DANDR in detail about how eating a longer induction can hep you heal your body.
