  • PCOS and Uterine Cancer risks

    Hi ladies-

I am back to the ADBB after a very long hiatus. In 2004 I lost 45 pounds on Atkins...and I have gained every pound back over the last 4 years because of my carb / sugar addiction.

Because of my PCOS I need very much to get my weight under control once and for all. That is why I am back. The ONLY dietary approach that has worked for me in the last 10 years has been Atkins. Believe me when I say i have tried EVERYTHING. Every diet you can imagine...Nothing else works for me. My PCOS and risk of diabetes has always been on my mind....But I have consistently said " I'll restart tomorrow" etc... day after day....

I guess the breaking point and wake up call to this destructive (high carb) way of eating came for me in May when I was diagnosed with Uterine cancer and had to have 2 surgeries, one of which was a hysterectomy. I am 36, have PCOS and have had many years of irregular and missed periods. Unbeknownst to me, missing periods and not regularly shedding the uterine lining over the years GREATLY increases your risk of a condition called hyperplasia which in turn increases the risk of uterine cancer. Hyperplasia is the thickening of the uterine lining. The normal thickness is 2-5 mm ...Mine had become 15 mm thick due to build up. I also had large cysts that were very painful on my ovaries and a condition called atypia in the lining of the uterus.

NO ONE ever told me this. SO I am telling you. BE SURE to tell your doctor if you are missing periods for a long time or if you have irregular/heavy bleeding that does not seem normal. This was the symptom that caused me to go see my doctor and demand more answers. This resulted in a uterine biopsy procedure and everything else followed. I am now free of cancer, but I think more women need to know the risk is there with PCOS.
You HAVE to shed the lining of the uterus regularly to have a healthy uterus.

I feel like part of my loss of the ability to have a family is my own fault....Had I only gotten my weight under control sooner and stuck to this way of eating, maybe I would not have had the cancer develop because estrogen dominance causes the problem...and obesity causes estrogen dominance.....but all I can do now is move forward and try again to take control of my health.

By the way, if you ever have to have a uterine biopsy DO NOT believe the doctor when they say it wont hurt. They told me it would only feel like a little pinch. NO! IT WAS HORRIBLE! If you have to have this done in your doctors office ( I had it done in the OBGYN office), demand some kind of pain medication prior to the procedure. You wont be sorry you did. I was sorry that I didnt...but then I didnt know to ask....

So here I go...starting over. Wish me luck.
